Help us bring the bus to the Y!
Since moving to Summit Road, the number of people served by the Keene Family YMCA has increased six-fold. Men, women, seniors, teens, children, and families of all ages, backgrounds, and physical abilities are finding their way to the Y! We are proud of our new facility and its accessibility, and would like to make the Y even more accessible to all by adding a public bus stop.
Since 2012, we have been working with Home Healthcare Hospice & Community Services (HCS), operator of the City Express, to find a way to bring the bus closer to the Y. We are thrilled to announce that after years of discussing and planning, we are making progress! The Keene Zoning & Planning Boards have approved installing a bus stop and turnaround at the end of the Y’s driveway on Summit Road. Now the fun begins, that is raising the funDs!!
We need to raise $19,000 to build a turnaround and bus shelter to bring the bus to the Y. Your donation today of $5, $25, $50 or more can help make getting to the Y easier for everyone who relies on the City Express! Please donate today!
Since no gifts, benefits, or services will be given in exchange for your contribution towards the bus stop, this support will represent a tax-deductible charitable contribution under current IRS guidelines. The Keene Family YMCA’s TIN is 02-0222247.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Why do you need to build a turnaround and shelter? Can’t the bus just drop off at the main entrance?
A: A turn around and shelter at the end of the drive will be safer for all using the Y, rather than having a bus come through the parking lot multiple times per day. In addition, since the bus is on a very tight schedule, this will allow the City Express to stay on time for all users.
Q: I thought there was already a stop near the Y?
A: The bus currently stops, by request, in front of Kristen’s Bakery on Park Avenue. While only .52 miles from the Y, for our physically challenged and elderly members, and those with many small children in tow, the ½ mile can serve as a major barrier to accessing the programs at the Y.
Q: Since when is the Y in the transportation business?
A: While bus routes and schedules are not something the Y would typically be involved with, helping find a solution to the transportation barrier many of our community members are faced with, is of great interest to us. The City of Keene does not currently offer bus service. The City Express is operated by another non-profit agency in our community, Home Healthcare Hospice & Community Services, which they took on after recognizing the need for this vital service. HCS is contributing to the project on Summit Road by donating a bus shelter worth $5,000, to be used by waiting passengers.
Q: How much is the project going to cost?
A: The total cost for the project is estimated at $26,500. This includes $4,000 for engineering and site work, $5,000 for a bus shelter, $17,500 for grading and final paving. We are very fortunate to have already received $2,500 from the Hoffman Family Foundation, and a shelter valued at $5,000 from HCS. That leaves $19,000, which we'd like to raise by the end of the summer so work can begin in September, hopefully long before the first snow falls!
