A series of events are being planned by "The Severn King" Chas Phipps, former Gloucestershire Champion Marathon Water Skier.
Chas achieved British, European and World record status throughout the 1960's and 1970's with his daring feats of endurance. At the pinnacle of his career in October 1969 set a record skiing non-stop for 473 miles over 15 hours on Lake Windermere which involved the now banned night legs!
Fortunately for Chas, he or his team never had to call for rescue during his career on the water, however he has enjoyed the long term support of his favourite charity SARA (Severn Area Rescue Association).
Chas now approaching his 77th year has decided he wants to raise the profile of this vital rescue service and raise money by repeating one of his old records. As the first person ever to ski the Severn Bore. Now a very popular attraction in Gloucestershire. He plans to repeat this test of endurance from the 60's and do it all over again as a special come-back and as a mark of respect to his late friend and boat driver, all the while raising money for a good cause. This won't be a world record (Good on the 92 year old lady from California!) however it will be a British record if Chas can pull it off.
So the plan is to ski as far as possible for as long as possible along the Severn Estuary hopefully breaking his original 60's record. Money will be raised through donations and sponsorships with all money going to the SARA rescue team.
The event will be held in August with closure for the fundrasing being August the 31st.
This means an awful lot to Chas whom has been a "river boy" all his life. His love and dedication to the sport of water skiing was supported in full by his late wife whom often would accompany him on his record attempts.
