Community Parents Inc, Sandy victims NYC

Donation protected

On October 29, 2012, the peninsula of Far Rockaway was impacted by Hurricane Sandy, causing Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean to rise to record heights and meet, resulting in the unprecedented flooding of Community and Family Head Start. The first floor premises were immersed in 4 feet of water, destroying all the materials in 2 classrooms, the Family Services office, the Parent Room and a commercial kitchen.

The program provides comprehensive Head Start services to 111 income eligible 3-5 year old children and their families.  We have made contact with 58 families that either remained in the area, relocated or are staying with friends/family members.  Over half of our staff are residents of Far Rockaway.

As of November 12, 2012, there has been no utility service to the program
nor to many adjacent homes in the community.
The program has taken action as a disaster relief center and has begun distributions of clothing, food and basic essentials.

We are offering mental health services on site to help families and staff navigate this crisis and are in need of:
blankets
diapers
formula
 water
 hot food
cleaning supplies (bleach, mops, brooms, rubber gloves)
hand sanitizer
non perishable food
 toothpaste, toothbrushes
 deodorant
 chapstick
vaseline
baby wipes
feminine hygiene products
new packs of underwear and socks (all sizes)
first aid kits
 large black plastic bags
 grocery plastic bags
children's books & toys (2-5 year old) and some soft plush animals. (This list is not exhaustive)
