$18,000 is needed ASAP! for a new, slanted metal roof to cover the original tar roof. The rain is coming through and rusting the tin ceiling.
1818 Front St., Coushatta, Louisiana 71019.It was built in the 1920s as a Hardware., It is the last building on the block which still looks like it did when built.
Currently , it is an art studio, community meeting space and vintage shop. I have painting classes for children and adults. The income is being used to purchase and improve the property. Volunteers staff the events.
Along the way, an acculmulation of various pieces of Coushatta history have checked in : Coushatta High School auditorium seats, antique glass display cases from the Stephens Department Store, cash register from McGee Pharmacy, Movie seats for the Paco Theater, tin rescued from the demolition of the B.O. Jones Mercantile building, and more. It just keeps showing up and I enjoy hearing the stories about the items.
I have decided to begin collecting items and compiling narratives and other ephemera to create the Coushatta Red River Parish History Museum.
My husband and I plan to donate this building for that purpose in our will. The community will benefit from a beautiful example of an early 1900s architecture. It will be sound structurally. It will be given free and clear to the community.
Already, interest has been taken in improving the Historic Block. The Chamber of Commerce has added LED Christmas lighting on the block. The Street is being used for the Parades for the Rodeo and Christmas. The Mayor has began replacing all the pillars down the shop fronts. There will be new fascia up top. The buildings are getting painted front and back. The sidewalks will be repaired. Jolie Vintage has been the inspiration.
