Savannah Community Art

“You better get to work and do what non-profits do and raise money (for arts programs).”
-Savannah City Manager Rob Hernandez on July
25th, 2017, when speaking about his plans to cut
arts funding from the General Fund.

Savannah was built by the arts. One needs only to walk through our many beautiful squares, parks, and neighborhoods to see incredible architecture, public sculpture, and the ever-increasing presence of murals and public artworks.
Savannah needs you! Some don't recognize the benefits that art offers. They don't realize the impact that art has had and can continue to have on our community. Let's show them!
On Friday, September 8th at 7pm, in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition “(the other side of the) Worlds Collide,” Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs’ Cultural Arts Gallery will host an hour-long discussion on “The Impact of Art on the Community.” The panel features internationally acclaimed exhibition artist Rob Hessler, Deep Center Executive Director Dare Dukes, Hip-Hop musician Clay Hodges, and Director of Galleries at Brenau University Nichole Rawlings. Moderated by Kris Hummer, Media Content Producer for Savannah’s WSAV television station, the foursome will engage in a guided dialogue focused on the effect that the arts exert on the people and places that it touches.Free and open to the public, this event aims to build connections between both those who make and facilitate art, and those who cherish and value its contributions to Savannah.

How the event will work:
The opening of the exhibition “(the other side of the) Worlds Collide” will commence at 6pm, where attendees will be invited to engage with Rob Hessler’s socially conscious artworks while enjoying light food and non-alcoholic beverages.
Each of the first 100 people to arrive will receive a “community bag.” This bag will include a collection of items from local organizations and businesses that are community-oriented or that have had a positive impact on Savannah in general.
At 7pm, attendees will move to the attached Black Box Theatre, where we’ll begin the hour-long panel discussion. The dialogue will be filmed for future release.
After the discourse has concluded, we’ll return to the gallery proper where the conversation will continue, with the panelists available to answer questions as well as brainstorm with you, the attendees, on ways that we can improve the bridge between the arts and society.
How the money will be used:Creating a community-oriented happening such as this (one for which we won’t be charging admission, to ensure that those of all income levels may attend) has expenses. The prestigious Puffin Foundation has demonstrated its belief in this program by partially funding the event to the tune of $1000, and the Cultural Arts Gallery (CAG) has committed to paying for advertising, but there are additional costs beyond what their generous donation provides. The expenses break down like this:
-Audio/Video Editing, Recording, and Broadcasting $1200
     -Black Box Rental $230
     -Advertising Costs $634.48
     -Speaker Stipends $500
     -Food and Beverages $250 (estimated)
     -“Community Bags” Production $250 (estimated)
     -Presentation and Exhibition Materials $1502.94
     -Miscellaneous Fees and Taxes $293.29
Total Costs: $4860.71
Puffin Donation: $1000
CAG Advertising Commitment: $634.48
Total Amount Still to be Raised: $3226.23

What your donation means: By backing this project you’re saying that art is a critical part of our community. You’ll be helping to create an event that will bring together people of diverse backgrounds to discuss what creativity does for our society that is essential to our very survival. And you’ll be telling everyone in Savannah in no uncertain terms that supporting the arts IS a priority!
Any amount raised in excess of the funding goal will be donated to Art Rise Savannah!

THANK YOU in advance for your generosity! Give yourself a pat on the back for being someone who truly cares about your community!
