Sunny Acres Recovery Home

Sunny Acres is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit located on a 72 acre working ranch at the edge of the city limit of San Luis Obispo, on the central coast of California. For 15 years we have been helping change lives.

Sunny Acres is a clean and sober recovery that is dedicated to teaching our residents how to recover from the disease of addiction in an affordable setting, with program participation benefitting all recovery residents as a whole. Sunny Acres is a program for those who have basically given up on everything but mere existence.

The Founder of Sunny Acres, Dan DeVaul was born in the farmhouse on the property. He learned early on the work ethic required for success in life. A vehicle accident at the age of 30 left him an incomplete quadriplegic and addicted to prescription drugs and alcohol. Dan has been clean and sober now for thirty years. He knows that recovery begins when individuals decide they must change their life or die.

Sunny Acres currently houses 30 individuals who are changing their lives on the ranch. They are building an 8,000 sq. ft. recovery residence on the ranch. It will have 14 bedrooms 10 bathrooms and a 30 x 30 dining hall. The money raised to build this residence has come in the form of donations of labor, materials and financial donations from the community. Sunny Acres residents also sell firewood, grow and sell pumpkins and other produce, raise cattle for sale, as well as selling Christmas trees. The residents do not want to be a burden to the taxpayers; self sufficiency is their goal. They are providing most of the labor to build their new recovery residence. Currently, residents live in the 100 year old farmhouse on the ranch. The conditions are crowded and yet they work together as a family and mentor each other in recovery.

Vocational opportunities are many on the ranch. Recovery residents can learn auto mechanics, equipment repair, construction, welding, gardening, farming, housekeeping, retails sales, food prep and cooking, laundry services as well as large farm animal care. They also collect eggs from the chickens they raise to feed the residents.

Sunny Acres recovery residents "learn by doing" which is the motto of the local university, Cal Poly. Staying busy each day keeps those in the program occupied  and away from their former self destructive behaviors and haunts. At the end of the day, each can truly say that each hour was spent as an investment in their recovery.

The need is great for those needing to recover and become clean and sober. This residence will provide additional beds for those in need. Please consider our project when you charitably give from your heart. We thank you, in advance.
