Support this campaign to help #FundTrove digitisation of Knox and the Dandenong Ranges’ historical local newspapers, helping see more of our collective history easily accessible and conveniently searchable on Trove .

Want to help many people save time and access vital historical sources? Support this campaign to see more newspapers digitised on Trove  and you’ll be helping people easily search history and countless subjects from the convenience of their internet enabled device anywhere in the world. Right now there are newspapers that can only be accessed from one room and which require lots of time to trawl through. Your donation will save people and community groups time and effort, as well as enrich their understanding of themselves and their interests. By supporting this campaign you’ll help #FundTrove digitisation of Knox and the Dandenong Ranges’ newspapers.

The Dandenong Ranges Historical Council (with the support of their member Historical Societies) is currently trying to see historical local newspapers digitised on Trove , which we just need a small portion of funding to help make part of this possible. Historical newspapers allow countless people and community groups to conduct research about their history as well as a wealth of subjects. Trove  provides quick easy access to thousands of newspapers online. Unfortunately though, due to a lack of funding, there are thousands of newspapers that can only be accessed at State Libraries and specific repositories in fragile physical form or microfilm, which take much time to search. Funding has been provided for one of Knox and southern Dandenong Ranges’ historical local newspapers, the Mountain District Free Press (1946-1954), to be digitised in 2019, we just need to crowdfund a small portion to see it accessible and searchable online. There are 4 other newspapers (between 1920-1954) ready to digitise with funding. Your donation will make a difference by allowing anyone in the world to quickly research historical events and countless interests from the comfort of any of their internet enabled devices.

Got questions? Historical newspapers can help you answer them
Have you ever wondered about the history of your local area, family or a particular interest? What is that park or street named after? When was a community group started and what were the major events that formed them into who they are today? When was someone born or married? When did events take place? This and many more questions can be answered by consulting historical newspapers.

Fantastic resource that is Trove
Trove  is a valuable research resource for community members and groups that makes it possible to answer many questions. The digitised newspapers allow anyone to conduct historical research anywhere at any time from the comfort of their internet enabled device. It offers people indiscriminate of geographic location, time or physical constraints the opportunity to research a wealth of interests.

Thousands of newspapers yet to be digitised
Unfortunately though, whilst there are thousands of newspapers on Trove , there are thousands waiting to be fully digitised. Some locations aren’t even represented. This means that to access historical newspapers people must travel to State Libraries and repositories and commit much time handling delicate newspapers or scrolling through microfilm. These are not as accessible and easily searchable as Trove ’s online digitised newspapers, which can be quickly accessed and searched by anyone in the world at any time.

Funding needed to help make newspapers easily accessible and searchable online
In partnership with community groups, research and cultural organisations, private donors and crowdfunding across Australia, the National Library of Australia has now digitized around 1500 Australian newspapers to Trove . However, there are still thousands of historical newspapers yet to be digitised. Almost all the Knox and Dandenong Ranges area newspapers aren’t yet on Trove .  With more funding this will be possible. The historical local newspapers of Knox and the Dandenong Ranges are of interest to tens of thousands of residents, many community groups and countless global enthusiasts.

Vital historical local sources will be available with the digitisation of Knox and the southern Dandenong Ranges’ newspapers
Digitising the historical local newspapers for the Knox and southern Dandenong Ranges communities will make vital resources readily searchable. It will enable the community groups and members to further explore their local identity with convenience. It will also send a message to the world that Knox and southern Dandenong Ranges communities are to be valued and worth further investigation.

With funding the Knox and the southern Dandenong Ranges historical local newspapers are ready to be digitised
There are 5 Shire of Fern Tree Gully historical local newspapers microfilmed, out of copyright and ready to be digitised. All that is needed is the funding.

These are:

The Mountaineer (1920-1921);

The Pilot (1921-1922);

Fern Tree Gully news (1923-1947);

Mountain district free press (1946-1954);

and Ferntree Gully and district times (1953-1954).

Historical local newspapers are of interest to local community groups, residents and countless global researchers
These historical local newspapers are of benefit and interest to many historical societies, Eastern Regional Libraries, schools, local faith communities, Scout and Guide groups, sporting clubs and other community groups; as well as local residents, especially family history researchers. They would also be of interest to researchers, professional and amateur, of many different subject interests. For this reason it would be best making the newspapers as readily accessible and conveniently searchable as possible. The best option for this is to digitise them online through Trove  .

Mountain District Free Press – almost fully funded
One of these historical local newspapers is almost funded to be digitised, we just need to crowdfund a small portion of the cost to help see it accessible on Trove and searchable online. Already the Shire of Yarra Ranges has kindly provided a grant to Dandenong Ranges Historical Council (with the support of their member Societies) towards helping see the Mountain District Free Press (1946-1954) digitised and made searchable on Trove in 2019. There is just a small part left to be fundraised for more than 5,000 pages of this historical local newspaper to be digitised and conveniently searchable on Trove  . We’ve signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the National Library of Australia, meaning we have just a couple of months to raise this small amount.

Other historical local newspapers can be digitised with grant and community support
Of course, once the Mountain District Free Press (1946-1954) is digitised there is still a need to digitise 4 other microfilmed and 2 physical out-of-copyright historical local newspapers, which are ready all that is needed is the funding. We hope to receive an additional grant from Knox City Council in the future to help fund this. The continued support of the community to our campaign and a grantee’s own group funding helps towards making this possible. Any additional money raised beyond the cost of digitising the Mountain District Free Press will help see a more comprehensive digital availability of Knox and the southern Dandenong Ranges’ historical local newspapers on Trove  .

It is quite possible for the digitisation of the 4 microfilmed out-of-copyright historical local newspapers to occur. A survey of the four newspapers yet to be partly-funded for digitisation shows that there is an estimated total of 9,834 pages in 1,418 weekly issues to be digitised between 1920 to 1954. It costs $2.31 per microfilmed page to digitise a newspaper on Trove  . This means that it would cost an estimated total of $22,716.54 to digitise the out of copyright run of the four newspapers. It is possible to receive a single grant to help towards funding a major part of the costs of digitising, but not all that is needed. Grantees that can provide part of the cost of their projects have a better chance of receiving grants. We hope to crowdfund to help digitise part of history.

Your donation will make a difference
By donating towards this project you’ll make Trove  more enriched with digitised newspapers that enable residents, community groups, enthusiasts and professional researchers to research local history and a wealth of subject interests. This will mean people all over the world will be able to research these newspapers quite conveniently. It will also make the Knox and Dandenong Ranges communities identities readily enriched. Various community groups will be able to research their respective history. Members of the online community with connection to the Knox and the Dandenong Ranges will be able to research their family history. Students, researchers and enthusiasts of diverse interests will find fulfillment in having these newspapers once again easily accessible and searchable. You will be helping many people to engage with their history anywhere and anytime from the comfort of any internet enabled device.

Support this campaign to help #FundTrove digitisation of Knox and the Dandenong Ranges’ historical local newspapers, helping see more of our collective history easily accessible and conveniently searchable on Trove . Saving people and community groups time and effort.
