WHAT IT IS:
An art space called “Tortuga Island,” will be an all inclusive, fun, safe raw art and community space that serves as a platform for Black Widows Empire to grow and serve the community around us. We believe every community needs space for art and expression to thrive, now more than ever.
WHO WE ARE:
Feminist rock band Black Widows is the brainchild of Pamela Laizure and Corinne Caouette. What started as a sisterhood of rock and roll has grown into something much bigger and we need space to spread out! Known collectively as the “Black Widows Empire,” our family of musicians, dancers, artists, and fun-makers is a dedicated and truly DIY bunch. Tortuga Island will be a communal space for us to write, record, rehearse, choreograph, design costumes, and create our own art and merchandise. Tortuga Island will also serve as a performance venue/ gallery for artists and a space for us us to connect and collaborate with the community. We will provide creative opportunities and classes, host artists and speakers, and team up with other visionaries so we can not only kick our level of performance up a notch, but also support other progressive, feminist artists in their endeavors. We love rock and roll, but it's time for us to do more. That said, you can also expect monthly evenings of ridiculously fun entertainment that showcase all the goings-on of Black Widows Empire!
GOAL: $5,000
While we don't lack ideas or work ethic, we do lack funds. We are seeking help for the initial costs of opening Tortuga Island. We’ll need to secure and renovate a space, as well as acquire materials and equipment to get us going. While we strive to become a self-sustaining venture, we simply need a financial boost to assist us in these beginning stages. By contributing, you allow us to dedicate ourselves more frequently and thoroughly to this endeavor. In addition to securing our endless gratitude and appreciation, donors will also have access to our community programming, receive a fabulous reward (details to come), and will be invited to our Greatest Opening Celebration Ever!
All of the money raised and earned in relation to Tortuga Island will be reinvested into the space and its happenings. Please consider donating to helping us get our feet off of the ground. We are currently looking at spaces and will keep you updated as things progress. If you cannot contribute monetarily but would like to donate your skills, time, or items from our wish-list, please send us a message!
