Philosphy:
"We Hustle From Tip to Buzzer." Excellence is not given but achieved through hard work and dedication. The positive work ethic learned on the court may be utilized in all apects of life. Basketball is but a vessel, through which the teachings of life are placed in a practical form. In life, as on the court, all goals may be achieved through hard work, education, practice, knowledge, and understanding.
Vision:
The purpose of The Chicago Stars program is to promote educational opportunities (Div I, Div II, JUCO), Athletic Scholarships and/ or exposure, work ethic, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Through teamwork and commitment the members of The Chicago Stars travel to new environments, meet and are influenced by those who are not in their "hood"; realizing through an interwoven teaching of athletics (basketball) that to better a community is to first better yourself, and then working with those of like minds to accomplish common goals, planned strategies, work for success. Placing focus on The Chicago Stars families as well as players to become productive individuals by introducing the rewards of hard work.
Primary Function:
The primary function of The Chicago Stars program is to implement love and desire for higher education, and oversee a positive and safe environmet in which youths in specific age groups may gain life advancement using the game of basketball. This program involves: skills, techniques, conditiong, training, practice, and inter-league play (including Park District, AAU, and National Events); these venues being overpopulated with collegiate scouts, coaches, & NBA programs. The establishment of this program ensures that The Chicago Stars members are well prepared and competetive.
Secondary Function:
The program's secondary function is to build a positive relationship of trust, honesty, and openess. The secondary funtion is geared towards the harsh reality of gangs, death, drugs, peer pressure, and inconsistencies that the members of The Chicago Stars face on a daily basis. Programming does stress school work, positive behavior, public apperance, communication, networking, and reality orientation.
Tertiary Function:
The third function of the program is to take a proactive stance in the lives of members of The Chicago Stars. The Chicago Stars are dedicated to the premeditated preparedness that will be achieved via consistent vigilance, communication, training, and professionalism that the individual members will need in society.
Rational:
The Urban Youth are in a state of crisis. The state of affairs within the urban setting has glamorized the fast life. Gang Members and Drug Dealers have replaced positive male role models. Instant gratification has replaced the need for hard work, education, and endurance. The implementation of The Chicago Stars program address' these issues on a daily basis by presenting positive role models. A proactive and constructive male presence will make a positive difference in the lives of The Chicago Stars members by presenting a substitute to the negative male role model.
The Chicago Stars staff works hand in hand with the families and schools in order to gain a real life assessement as to the needs of the individual.
The potential of the urban youth is squandered through glorification and glamorization of the street life, and the inefficient and ineffective use of the community resources. The rates of incarceration and recidivism, drop out, teen parents, unemployment, addiction, and single parent homes are rising; while African American male college graduation rates are dropping.
The Chicago Stars program is a valuable resource to the community. The consequences for a vigilant positive male presence within the community provides an opportunity for addressing situations and circumstances that must be faced by inner city youths. The Chicago Stars program increases socialization, communication, networking, and reality orientation, while consequently decreasing addiction, incarceration, and the need to join street gangs. The Chicago Stars Basketball program fills the void within the urban setting for positive role models and places youths is a positive and productive environment that is geared towards preparing the individual to make the correct choices in life.
