Art education in Haiti

My name is Danika Joyce Augustin and I am headed to Cayes, Haiti in mid-April of 2015. I have chosen to do an art lesson with the students of the School of Marceline and this program is expected to help bring art into the school’s everyday education. The school does not follow the typical Haitian-educational structure; accommodating about 80 students with only 3 teachers. The School of Marceline is funded solely by a local resident, whose generosity afforded for children of the school to earn their education for free. These students are from very low-income families unable to pay for their education, otherwise. Due to private and very limited funding, the school has a minimal resources that the teachers are able to use to facilitate learning. With this project, my goal is to give these students an art lesson they will always remember as well as provide art supplies for the school to use in the future to promote creative learning and expression. Creativity improves children’s self-esteem, motivation and achievement—aiding in the learning process. To make this project a reality, I need your help to raise $2,000. The funds will cover art materials for the projects and for the future use of the school. The funds will also cover shipping all materials to Cayes, Haiti and distribution to the classrooms at the School of Marceline.

I have less than 2 months to get this project to Haiti. Time is of the essence and will play a big factor in the feasibility of the project. I am asking for any donations to be fulfilled by April 1, 2015 in order to financially support this project in a timely manner. The funds will be used to purchase the art supplies and will also cover the cost to package and ship them abroad. I will be packing all materials in suitcases to fly with me, personally, because shipping is cost inefficient and causes a delay in receipt time.

This will be something new to the teachers at the school and the students alike. The educators at the School of Marcelaine already do a wonderful job teaching the children and now I want to help them integrate art into their everyday classroom to give them an invaluable return—a creative outlet that will further the facilitation of learning!
