<div>We are Angélica and Jerome, and we’re raising funds for our little daughter Mia — a sweet, funny, intelligent, and deeply loving 3-year-old girl who now needs all of us to help her grow free from pain, just like any other child her age.
</div>

<div>Mia has been diagnosed with an extremely rare and complex genetic condition called Morquio Syndrome Type IVa. This disorder prevents her body from producing a vital protein called GALS, which severely impacts her bones, spine, hearing, vision, and even her heart.
</div>
<div>Because this is such a rare condition — with very few cases in Australia — it is difficult to diagnose and doesn’t fall under the usual criteria for urgent testing.
</div>
<div>To give you a bit more context:

<div>In February 2024, after two years of follow-up due to a liver issue, doctors began noticing unusual flexibility in Mia’s hands. This raised concerns and led to further investigation.
</div>
<div>In May, Westmead Hospital contacted us to perform an MRI scan to assess the extent of the damage. Sadly, the results were alarming: the scan revealed visible bruising on her spinal cord, meaning Mia is at high risk of paraplegia if we don’t take urgent action. Her internal organs continue to grow, but her skeletal system cannot support that growth.

<div>In Australia they have a very limited number of treatments that they are permitted to recommend, almost exclusively surgeries and a lifetime of weekly enzyme transfusions as part of a palliative care regime.
</div>
<div>None of these options are appealing, as any surgery at her current age is extremely high risk, and palliative care is simply what you do when you’re waiting to die.
</div>

<div>We refused to allow those to be her only options, so we looked overseas for information on what other countries were doing. We found some other available treatments, and while they too are risky, the potential upside is much better than anything currently available in Australia.
</div>

</div>
<div>What Does Mia Need?
</div>
<div>Specialists in the United States have recommended an urgent bone marrow transplant. While this procedure won’t completely cure her condition, it would give her body the strength it needs to grow and prepare her for possible future surgeries.
</div>

</div>
<div>Due to the high costs in the United States, we have made the decision to seek treatment in India, which is known worldwide for its excellence in bone marrow transplants.
</div>
<div>The procedure is planned after June 18, 2025, and we urgently need to raise $80,000 AUD to cover medical expenses, hospitalization, treatment, and travel. As an update, we don't have a final travel date just yet due to the latest medical meeting. Now we're looking for a matching donor as well.

<div>Why Are We Asking for Help?

<div>This procedure is expensive and far beyond our means. But Mia deserves the chance to walk, play, and live her childhood to the fullest.

<div>Her diagnosis does not define who she is: she is still a cheerful, brave, sensitive, and incredibly loving little girl. But the impact of this condition at such a young age is very real — and deeply serious.

<div>Mia tiene solo 3 años y ha sido diagnosticada con una condición genética extremadamente rara y compleja llamada síndrome de Morquio tipo IV. Esta enfermedad impide que su cuerpo produzca una proteína esencial llamada GALS, lo que afecta gravemente su sistema óseo, la espina dorsal, la audición, la visión e incluso su corazón.

<div>Debido a que se trata de una enfermedad muy poco común y con pocos casos en Australia, es difícil de detectar y no está dentro de los criterios de urgencia para exámenes especializados.

<div>Para darles un poco más de contexto: en febrero de 2024, tras dos años de seguimiento por un problema hepático, los médicos notaron una flexibilidad inusual en sus manos. A raíz de eso, comenzaron a sospechar que algo más ocurría.

<div>En mayo, el Hospital Westmead nos contactó para realizar una resonancia magnética (MRI) con el fin de evaluar el impacto de la enfermedad. Desafortunadamente, los resultados fueron alarmantes para todos nosotros: se detectó amoratamiento visible en su médula espinal, lo que indica un alto riesgo de paraplejia si no se interviene a tiempo. Esto ocurre porque sus órganos internos siguen creciendo, pero su estructura ósea no está acompañando ese desarrollo.

<div>En Australia, el número de tratamientos que los médicos están autorizados a recomendar es muy limitado —casi exclusivamente cirugías y transfusiones semanales de enzimas como parte de un régimen de cuidados paliativos por el resto de su vida.

<div>¿Qué necesita Mia?
</div>
<div>Médicos en Estados Unidos han recomendado un trasplante de médula ósea como tratamiento urgente. Este procedimiento no curará por completo su enfermedad, pero le permitirá fortalecer su cuerpo y crecer, dándole la posibilidad de someterse a futuras cirugías si fueran necesarias.

<div>Por los altos costos de este tipo de intervención en Estados Unidos, hemos decidido viajar a India, el segundo país del mundo con mayor experiencia en este tipo de procedimientos.

<div>El procedimiento está programado para después del 18 de junio de 2025, y necesitamos reunir $80,000 AUD para cubrir gastos médicos, hospitalización, tratamiento y traslados. Desafortunadamente, los tiempos no se dan como se planean, sino como Dios o el universo lo deciden. Ahora estamos buscando un donante 100% compatible con Mia debido a su síndrome.
