Charlie Capalbo, a standout Fairfield CT hockey goalie, passed away on April 24, 2022, after his 4th cancer battle in 5 years. After beating lymphoma once and leukemia twice, Charlie had to face off with leukemia for a 3rd time. Below is a message from Charlie's mother, Jenny. It includes her request to donate to pediatric AML research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in memory of Charlie. 24 * T W E N T Y F O U R * 24 * T W E N T Y F O U R * 24 Charlie would be turning 24 on Tuesday, May 24th! 30 was his jersey number, but 24 turned out to be a pretty significant number for him – he was born on the 24th, died on the 24th and received his life saving bone marrow transplant from Will back in 2019 on 2-4. ******************************************************* Cardiopulmonary Failure due to Relapsed Refractory Central Nervous System Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) – that’s the official cause of death on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Certificate of Death. RUNX1, BRAF, TP53 and FLT3 aren’t on the certificate, but we knew those were his specific recurrent gene mutations. Thank goodness for genetic testing and research scientists that are constantly learning new information to help target treatments for AML (and other cancers). Unfortunately, what they already know about Charlie’s mutations is that they don’t respond well to current treatments and are generally associated with poor outcomes…for a variety of reasons, he was doomed at diagnosis. Love, courage and positivity carried him a really long way…we all know he was truly a miracle to have stayed in the fight as long as he did! And, especially to have overcome countless life threatening complications over the last five years, and to have enjoyed two really good remissions. But at 23, on his fourth diagnosis (third relapse) the treatment options ran out, and Charlie knew he was dying. He was not afraid. He wanted everyone who loves him to take care of each other, to continue to live life and to be sure to laugh every day. He also wanted us to continue to do our part to help others. As part of helping others, we’ve committed to raising funds for research specifically for pediatric AML so that hopefully one day no child has to suffer the way Charlie did. You all have been incredibly generous and thoughtful over the years so we don’t like to ask for more, but in memory of Charlie, for what would have been his 24th birthday, would you consider donating $24 to Dr. Armstrong’s lab?
