<div>Hi! We are Claire, Rebecca, and Michael Bicak, Rusty’s foster family.

<div>Rusty is a 4-year-old golden retriever mix dog who has endured numerous traumas in his life. When Rusty was rescued from a kill shelter in California, he had a broken front elbow. The way he limped and moved, you could tell he was always in pain. After several rounds of X-rays and treatments, it was decided that the only way to give him any quality of life was to remove the leg. Unfortunately, there were complications. We almost lost him to an antibiotic-resistant infection, but he has a strong will to live and pulled through following more surgeries and a 10-day stay at the emergency vet.

<div>Although Rusty has fully recovered from the surgeries, he is now dealing with the fact that most of his weight is resting on one front leg; as a result, his leg is starting to bow, and his shoulder is degenerating. He tires easily and can only go for short walks. If he had a prosthetic leg, it would support him, and he could go for as long as he wanted!

<div>We have also discovered that he has several fractured and infected teeth. The vet said that they often see this in rescue dogs, either from chewing on rocks (due to hunger) or chewing on chains or chain link to get free. He needs to have dental surgery, but it will be a long process. The vet can only work on his teeth for four hours at a time and then let him recover for 24 hours before putting him under anesthesia again.

<div>We are estimating the cost of his prosthesis and oral surgery at $6,600. This amount includes a 10% contingency fund. Any money left over will be donated to the Seattle Humane Society as a gesture of appreciation for their support in performing the amputation surgery.
