<div>In early January 2025, our family received devastating news when my Aunt Lupe—Maria Guadalupe Valadez—was diagnosed with Myelofibrosis, a rare and serious blood cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow.

<div>For nearly 20 years, Lupe devoted herself to working with the Benedict Sisters in Boerne, Texas. As her illness progressed and symptoms became more severe, she was no longer able to continue working. Shortly after, my Uncle Juan had to stop working as well in order to become Lupe’s full-time caregiver.

<div>For almost a year, their family has been facing the physical, emotional, and financial challenges that come with this diagnosis. As of December 22, 2025, Lupe is on day three of her bone marrow transplant journey. She is currently hospitalized and will remain there for over a month, followed by several more months of intensive recovery and ongoing treatment.
