(גלגל למטה לתרגום בעברית)  (日本語翻訳のためにスクロールダウン) On Thursday, September 19th of this year, while with my friend, Guy Carmel, at his home in Costa Rica, I found myself standing along side him in his front yard watching helplessly as his home and all of his possessions were consumed by a violent house fire caused by an electrical short.  We were sitting in the downstairs kitchen of the house in the early afternoon when we heard a strange noise coming from upstairs. Guy went up to check it out, and I don’t think I will ever forget the chilling sound of his voice yelling “fire,” nor will I forget the intensity of the next minutes spent comprehending what was happening, trying to put the fire out, and finally having to flee the house in order to save our lives. The fire started from a faulty dimmer lamp that short circuited and sparked into open flame. The speed with which the flame grew out of control was terrifying. We are lucky to have escaped mostly unharmed - though Guy did sustain some burns to his right arm and eventually escaped the fire by jumping from the second floor balcony. Within 25 minutes, the devastation was total - the house and everything in it was incinerated to nothing more than charcoal and ashes. We were left with only the clothes we were wearing. Adding to the heartbreak, the home had been the realization of Guy's lifetime dream. After many years of hard work and sacrifice to afford it, and a leap of faith to make a change for the better, he got this place about 6 years ago. Since then, he has constantly worked on it and lovingly cared for it. His grief over the loss of the house and the sense of home that it provided is as heavy as the massive financial loss.  It is impossible to describe the experience of having every material item that is necessary, meaningful, and familiar - from the roof over your head, to the sentimental items collected over a lifetime - completely annihilated in the same moment. As with any significant loss, the proceeding days have been filled with complex emotional turmoil and logistic uncertainty. The purpose of this GoFundMe campaign is to offset the minimum expense Guy now faces to rebuild his home as well as his life.
