<div>A 250-megawatt Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)—<strong>ten times as large</strong> <strong>as any other BESS facility in New York</strong>—is being proposed <strong>less than a mile from homes and condos, and within 1.2 miles of three schools in the Hurley–Kingston–Ulster area</strong>. Thousands of residents, including children, would live within immediate proximity to a high-voltage industrial facility with <strong>documented fire and toxic-gas risks</strong>.

<div>My name is Jillian Fried, co-founder and vice president of Integrity Project Solutions, Inc., a registered New York nonprofit based in Hurley, New York. Our organization has created a <strong>Community Legal &amp; Advocacy Fund </strong>to ensure the proposed project is reviewed with full transparency and public oversight.

<div>Donations will primarily go toward <strong>retaining legal counsel </strong>to guide and support the community throughout the full review and response process — including matters related to the State Environmental Quality Review (SEQRA), coordination with local agencies, and other legal or procedural steps necessary to ensure transparency and accountability. Additional funds will support <strong>expert input, flyers, website fees, signage, and public outreach</strong> to keep residents informed and actively involved.

<div>Recent incidents show why independent review is essential.
</div>
<div>In <strong>August 2025</strong>, a California battery facility fire forced a <strong>two-mile evacuation</strong>, and in <strong>September 2025</strong>, two Tesla Megapack units ignited at a Nevada storage site, <strong>releasing toxic smoke that burned for hours.</strong>
</div>
<div>These events highlight that even modern systems can fail—<strong>releasing hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen cyanide, and chemical runoff that pose risks to air, soil, and groundwater quality.</strong>
</div>

<div>Local risks are magnified here:<strong> limited evacuation routes, a volunteer fire department,</strong> and nearby wetlands and residential areas make this location unsuitable for a facility of this size.
</div>
<div>Importantly, <strong>this location is not the only option</strong>—the Hudson Valley and greater New York region contain industrial-zoned sites already designed for large-scale energy infrastructure, safely distanced from schools and homes.
