<div>Dear Friends, Olivia's orthopaedic surgeon at Paley Insititute, Dr David Feldman, has done THE INCREDIBLE! He intervened surgically to save Olivia's life. Her spine was collapsing, and her spinal cord was compressed. She was losing all mobility in her lower limbs, and her organs were beginning to fail. We urgently needed your help to pay for this out-of-pocket surgery and it was a success! He and his team were able to fuse and decompress vertebrae C7-L4. If you can donate, we are continuing this fundraiser to pay for post-operative medical expenses, for example, costly daily sessions of physical therapy and hydrotherapy at the Paley Institute. With the help of the Paley PT team, our goal is for her to walk within 6 months post-surgery!

<div>Dr David Feldman, a specialized spinal surgeon at the Paley Institute in Florida, performed a life-saving spinal surgery in order to prevent Olivia's paralysis. We arrived in Florida and met with Dr Feldman and his team to review Olivia's case in close detail in advance of her surgery. <div>Olivia is 10 years old, measures 70cm, weighs 22 lbs and suffers from muscular and joint pain. She has never been able to walk. Due to her rare condition, Olivia has a curved spine and neck instability. Dr Feldman is the only doctor based in Florida, USA, who could surgically intervene to help fix Olivia's curved spine.

<div>Olivia was clinically diagnosed in January 2013 with an extremely rare genetic bone disease, a form of Dwarfism, called Goldblatt Syndrome (aka Odontochondrodysplasia/ Spondylometaphyseal dysplasia). After thorough investigations by American, Swiss, French and British doctors, no doctor has been able to diagnose her molecularly. Worldwide, only 18 other children have been diagnosed with Goldblatt Syndrome.

<div>We live each day, day by day. Due to the rareness of Goldblatt Syndrome, Olivia's future is uncertain. How much will she grow? Will she ever walk? No one knows. We are writing the textbook each day. It is a life-limiting condition; therefore, we must offer Olivia all the support she needs for the best quality of life.

<div>The disease does not allow Olivia’s muscle strength to develop, and her severe spinal curvature and the weight of her heavy head on a small-sized body cause her to be unbalanced. She cannot walk and suffers from pain every day.

<div>Je m’appelle Olivia Lugani. J’ai dix ans. Tu ne me connais peut-être pas mais j’aimerais devenir une amie. Je souffre tous les jours et j’ai aussi beaucoup de rendez-vous chaque semaine chez le docteur afin de me faire examiner. Maman et papa me font beaucoup de câlins pour que je me sente mieux, mais je sais qu’ils ont peur. Pour le moment je ne peux pas marcher, mais je m’entraîne chaque jour, quelque pas, en utilisant mon déambulateur.
