<div><strong>***UPDATE***</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Liebe Unterstützende,
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div>Jede noch so kleine Spende hilft Familien hier vor Ort also sehr!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Vielen Dank!
</div>
<div>Eure Jessica

</div>
<div>Liebe Unterstützende,
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>

<div><strong>***UPDATE***</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Dear Supporters,
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>first of all, <strong>thank you so much</strong> to all the donors over the past few weeks – with your help, we’ve already been able to achieve a great deal!
</div>
<div>Today, I’m reaching out with a slightly delayed update. The past few weeks have demanded a lot of energy and organizational skills from us on the ground.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>As we continue to expand home-based care for people affected by MPox in our region, I want to share a story about <strong>Zainab</strong>. Two months ago, she completed her three-year nursing training and was one of the first to join our <strong>voluntary community engagement team</strong>. Over the past few days, she has been caring for <strong>her first MPox patient </strong>with great dedication: a <strong>mother of three children</strong>, aged three to ten, <strong>from Waterloo – a town 100 km away</strong>. Despite her severe symptoms, the woman made the long journey to us. Her suffering must have been immense. Unlike in Germany, for instance, public buses in Sierra Leone are often overcrowded and packed with animals or sacks of rice. On top of that, temperatures are currently around 35°C, with no air conditioning. But her <strong>fear of stigma and mistreatment in her hometown </strong>was even greater – because public awareness is still low, and healthcare workers are not yet adequately trained in dealing with the spreading infection.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Zainab took on the care of the patient with <strong>deep compassion</strong>. Every day, she provides the best possible care in an isolation room in the emergency ward, often researching new ways to ease symptoms late into the evening. She also does everything she can to protect the patient’s family from stigma – using her knowledge about MPox to <strong>educate them</strong> and also <strong>inform her colleagues</strong> at the hospital. Two years after the first global MPox case, a vaccine is now available, but it is still far from sufficient to protect all healthcare workers in Sierra Leone, let alone vulnerable groups.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Zainab’s patient is gradually recovering and will soon be able to return to Waterloo – something we are all incredibly grateful for! However, the patient’s family has suffered significant <strong>financial losses due to her absence, as she usually works as a street vendor to help provide for them</strong>.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>With just 25€, we can help cover the hospital costs and compensate for the financial losses the family has faced in recent days.</strong>
</div>
<div>Every donation – no matter how small – truly makes a big difference for families here on the ground!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you so much!
</div>
<div>Yours,
</div>
<div>Jessica
</div>

<div><br />
</div>
<div>Dear Supporters,
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>My name is Jessica, and I am originally from Extertal. For the past nine years, I have been living in Sierra Leone, working in the field of development cooperation. During this time, I have supported numerous health projects in various regions. My passion lies in training healthcare workers and improving healthcare access for the population.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Today, I am reaching out with an urgent plea from Sierra Leone: As you may know, many African countries are currently battling the <strong>Mpox virus</strong>. Unfortunately, it has not stopped at our national border and is now hitting Sierra Leone with full force.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We are currently recording around <strong>100 new infections daily,</strong> with a total of nearly 2,500 cases since the beginning of the year — and as always, the number of unreported cases remains unknown. The <strong>treatment centers and their beds are far from sufficient</strong>. As a result, many infected individuals remain in their home villages, receiving no information on how to protect their loved ones or manage their painful symptoms.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Now more than ever, the political direction of the world is becoming painfully clear. The massive budget cuts in development cooperation are severely affecting aid organizations on the ground — both smaller ones and large institutions such as the WHO.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Yet, even in the midst of this chaos, just like during the Ebola and COVID outbreaks, Sierra Leone once again shows its greatest strength: a strong and committed community.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Together with Isata Kabia — an important advocate for women and youth in our country — I launched the "<strong>Community Shield" project</strong>. This initiative aims to contain the Mpox outbreak in the Marampa Chiefdom in the Port Loko District and to support those affected.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The project is based on a 100% <strong>community-driven approach</strong> — the same strategy that played a crucial role in overcoming Ebola. <strong>Volunteers from the communities</strong> are trained in preventive measures so they can pass on their knowledge in villages and schools, and implement hygiene stations. Additionally, <strong>volunteer nurses</strong>, together with a psychologist, visit those affected, offering guidance and helping them manage their severe symptoms. We are also working to establish <strong>systems that register infected individuals and enable contact tracing</strong>.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>It is truly inspiring to see how dynamic and committed the communities are, and how much passion and heart everyone is putting into this project.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Unfortunately, what we lack are the <strong>financial resources</strong> — to provide hygiene supplies, equipment for our teams on the ground, and support for families in the villages.
</div>
<div><strong>With just €5, we can equip a team with protective gear. €25 can make a real difference for an affected family.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>If you are able to <strong>support</strong> us in this important mission with a donation, I would be incredibly grateful.
</div>
<div>You can be assured that every cent goes directly to where it is needed and makes a real impact on the ground.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you so much for any support, no matter how small.
</div>
<div>Warm greetings from Sierra Leone,
</div>
