‼️Update on Maverick:‼️
Thanks so much to everyone who has reached out and asked about Maverick.
Here’s where we are at.
Maverick has been continually having issues with his airway. It’s very scary because at times (since his last surgery) he would gasp for air and struggle with some breaths. They believe the intubation could have heightened this without any of us knowing. Although he was thriving, gaining weight, and growing - he was struggling. When we tried to do his surgery on Thursday his airway was so tight that they could not even get a breathing tube in. This was obviously concerning. Sunrise hospital was unfortunately unable to accommodate what Maverick needed done, so they flew us to Primary Children’s Health in Salt Lake City Utah.
We arrived on Saturday and today (about 3 hours ago) he went in to surgery to examine his airway and determine the problem.
Maverick unfortunately didn’t have his airway growing or adjusting with his growth. It was extremely narrow. So narrow that they had to dialate it multiple times just to get the breathing tube in.
Upon inspection they determined it was be best to place Maverick with a trach for the next 8 months (maybe less, hopefully not more) until he’s already a year old to allow his airway to grow and expand.
There biggest fear was that if he was to get sick with even the most simple virus, that he would have his airway completely close on him.
For now, he has the trach placed and is on the ventilator. But because he does well on room air we will not have to be on a ventilator when we go home.
This road to recovery is going to be longer than we expected but we are pushing through and I will never stop advocating or speaking up even when other doctors try to tell me something isn’t wrong with him. ALWAYS TRUST YOUR GUT! Push for answers! Take them to the hospital 100 times if you have to! I am so grateful for the doctors and nurses here at Primary and we should be going home in about a week. Thank you all so much for reaching out and sending your love and prayers. We will get through this, Maverick is so lucky to have an amazing army of friends and family behind him. ❤️
