<div>Indienne–Française investigates my family’s emigration from Madagascar to France, weaving together personal history and the broader story of a little-known diaspora.
</div>
<div>My family are members of the Dawoodi Bohra community, a Shiite Muslim group originating from Gujarat, India. In the late 1800s, many Bohras migrated to East Africa in search of economic opportunity, establishing themselves as merchants and traders. My own ancestors settled in Madagascar, where they built a new life that blended Indian, Malagasi, and colonial French influences. Decades later, following Madagascar’s independence in the 1960s , many Bohra families, including mine, moved once again, this time to France. There, they took over new businesses, built new communities, and began the long process of cultural adaptation and integration.
</div>
<div>Through three generations of interviews, the film explores how migration reshapes identity. The first generation (represented by my grandmother) speaks of arrival and adaptation; the second generation (my mother and her siblings) reflects on balancing tradition with the pressures of French society; and the third generation (my cousins and I) grapples with what remains of our culture and faith today. Each generation will answer the same set of questions about our history, identity, and sense of belonging, revealing how perspectives shift with time and place. The film’s tone is warm, conversational, and rooted in oral tradition. In South Asian cultures, stories are shared around the family table, with humor, nostalgia, and vivid recollection. I want the viewer to feel as if they’ve been invited into our living room, listening as the elders recount the past and the younger ones respond with curiosity, laughter, and reflection.
