<div><strong>Pom’s onverwachte terugkeer naar Nederland</strong>

<div>Pom en ik waren samen al lange tijd op reis. Na een bijzondere periode in Australië, waar we werkten en nieuwe plekken ontdekten, stond haar laatste stop op de planning: Canada. Daar wachtte een baan en onderdak op haar. Tijdens onze reis had Pom soms last van haar huid, maar dat leek beheersbaar. Wat begon als incidentele eczeemuitbraken tijdens onze reis, werd uiteindelijk een zware en pijnlijke aandoening.

<div>In een poging de klachten te verlichten, gebruikte ze nog één week hormooncrème – maar juist toen begon het echte drama. Haar huidklachten verergerden plots zo ernstig dat ze haar reis moest afbreken en terug naar Nederland kwam.

<div><strong>TSW – een onbekende, ingrijpende ziekte</strong>
</div>
<div>Pom lijdt aan TSW (Topical Steroid Withdrawal), een hevige huidreactie die kan ontstaan na gebruik van hormooncrèmes tegen eczeem of andere huidproblemen. Zodra je stopt, kan de huid in een “ontwenningsshock” raken: rood, branderig, pijnlijk, schilferend en soms nat. Deze klachten kunnen maanden tot jaren aanhouden en hebben invloed op elk aspect van het dagelijks leven.

<div>Bij Pom zijn vooral haar gezicht, nek en armen zwaar aangetast. Op sommige plekken is bijna geen gezonde huid meer over. De constante pijn, jeuk en slapeloze nachten maken elke dag een uitdaging en hebben ook mentaal veel impact. Ondanks bloedonderzoeken en een volledig aangepast dieet is er nog weinig verbetering.

<div><strong>Behandeling in Nederland</strong>

<div>Tot voor kort moest je voor behandeling naar Thailand of Engeland, maar sinds vorig jaar is er gelukkig ook een gespecialiseerde kliniek in Nederland. Pom start daar binnenkort een traject van meerdere maanden met CAPS- en blue light-behandelingen, aangevuld met de pijn-reset methode, een holistische aanpak.

<div>Deze behandelingen zijn kostbaar en worden niet vergoed door de zorgverzekering. Pom kan door haar ziekte niet werken, heeft geen inkomsten, en is nu volledig afhankelijk van hulp van familie. Ook basiszaken als onderdak en vervoer zijn een uitdaging.

<div><strong>Pom’s Unexpected Return to the Netherlands</strong>
</div>
<div>Pom and I had been traveling together for quite some time. After a special period in Australia, where we worked and explored new places, her final stop was planned: Canada. A job and a place to live were already waiting for her there. During our travels, Pom occasionally struggled with skin flare-ups, but they seemed manageable. What started as occasional eczema outbreaks during the trip eventually turned into a severe and painful condition. In an attempt to ease the symptoms, she used steroid cream for one more week – but that’s when the real trouble began. Her skin problems suddenly became so severe that she had to cut her journey short and return to the Netherlands.

<div><strong>TSW – A Rare and Debilitating Condition</strong>
</div>
<div>Pom suffers from TSW (Topical Steroid Withdrawal), a serious skin reaction that can develop after using steroid creams for eczema or other skin issues. When you stop, the skin can go into “withdrawal shock”: becoming red, burning, painful, peeling, and sometimes oozing. These symptoms can last for months or even years, affecting every part of daily life.

<div>For Pom, the worst areas are her face, neck, and arms, where in some places there is almost no healthy skin left. The constant pain, itching, and sleepless nights make each day a challenge and take a heavy toll on her mental health. Despite blood tests and a fully adjusted diet, there has been little improvement so far.

<div><strong>Treatment in the Netherlands</strong>
</div>
<div>Until recently, TSW could only be treated in clinics in Thailand or England, but since last year there has also been a specialized clinic here in the Netherlands. Soon, Pom will start a months-long treatment program involving CAPS and blue light therapy, combined with the Pain-Reset method, a holistic approach.
