<div>My grandmother was born in Madrid in the 1930's. During Franco's regime, she fled to the UK, where she met my grandfather, also a refugee from another land - two displaced souls who built a new life together. She died in the early 80's, a few years before I was born.

<div>I spent my whole life not knowing her, not knowing that side of my family existed. Growing up, there was always this empty space - questions about where I came from, who I looked like, what stories I'd missed.

<div>Then recently, everything changed. I discovered I have relatives alive in Spain - family I've never met, stories I've never heard, connections I never knew were possible. Cousins. Aunts. Uncles. People who knew my grandmother. People who carry the same history I do.

Like so many others, she was forced to flee, seeking a better life beyond Spain's borders - a decision that left her stateless and stripped of the identity that was rightfully hers.
