<div>To qualify for early disability retirement through the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS/TEA), I need to buy back several years of service credit that I previously withdrew.

<div>Years ago, in the midst of a financial emergency, I had no choice but to pull from my retirement savings. At the time, survival was the only option. But now, those “years of service” are required in order for me to be eligible for early disability retirement—and the buyback cost is $7,000.
