<div>This is Javier — a beloved friend, father, lifeguard, and surf instructor from a small rural town in the Dominican Republic. For seven years, he worked side by side with his teammate Feliberto, keeping tourists and locals safe as a lifeguard at the Bahia Principe hotels. A true athlete, Javier lived for the ocean, competing in surf tournaments and teaching others to ride the waves he loved so much.

<div>Last year, while visiting a friend in his village, Javier went swimming in the river close to the center of town. Nearby, a crowd of citizens was gathering to protest their discontent to city officials over a critical water shortage. Residents had gone weeks without potable water, and tensions ran high. When police authorities arrived to disperse the protest, a warning shot was fired into the air. Javier wasn’t even in the crowd, still in the nearby river — but fate intervened in the cruelest way. That stray bullet came down and struck him in the clavicle and embedded itself in his spine.

<div>Javier is only 27 years old and the proud father of a 4-year-old daughter. Now bedridden, he can no longer work, move independently, or care for himself. His mother has become his full-time caregiver, and his wife works tirelessly to keep the family afloat. Their lives have been turned upside down.

<div>What breaks our hearts the most is that Javier doesn’t have a wheelchair. Every day, his family manually lifts him from his bed to a basic chair. That’s his new normal — stuck inside, day after day, watching life go by. <div>Este es Javier — un querido amigo, padre, salvavidas e instructor de surf de un pequeño pueblo rural en la República Dominicana. Durante siete años trabajó codo a codo con su compañero Feliberto, protegiendo a turistas y locales como salvavidas en los hoteles Bahía Príncipe. Como verdadero atleta, Javier vivía para el mar, compitiendo en torneos de surf y enseñando a otros a amar las olas que tanto significaban para él.

<div>El año pasado, mientras visitaba a un amigo en su pueblo, Javier quedó atrapado en medio de una protesta pacífica por la falta crítica de agua potable. Los vecinos llevaban semanas sin acceso al agua, y la desesperación los llevó a manifestarse. Cuando llegaron las autoridades para dispersar al grupo, dispararon un tiro al aire. Javier ni siquiera estaba en el centro de la protesta — se encontraba apartado — pero el destino intervino de la forma más cruel. La bala disparada al aire cayó y se alojó en su columna vertebral.

<div>Voici Javier — un ami bien-aimé, père de famille, sauveteur et moniteur de surf originaire d’un petit village rural en République dominicaine. Pendant sept ans, il a travaillé aux côtés de son coéquipier Feliberto, veillant à la sécurité des touristes et des habitants en tant que sauveteur dans les hôtels Bahia Principe. Véritable athlète, Javier vivait pour l’océan, participant à des compétitions de surf et enseignant à d’autres comment dompter les vagues qu’il aimait tant.

<div>L’année dernière, alors qu’il rendait visite à un ami dans son village, Javier est allé nager dans la rivière proche du centre-ville. Non loin de là, une foule de citoyens s’était rassemblée pour protester auprès des autorités locales contre une pénurie d’eau potable. Les habitants vivaient depuis des semaines sans eau potable, et la tension était à son comble. Lorsque la police est intervenue pour disperser la manifestation, un coup de semonce a été tiré en l’air. Javier ne faisait même pas partie du rassemblement — il était encore dans la rivière à proximité — mais le destin a frappé de la manière la plus cruelle. La balle perdue est retombée, l’a touché à la clavicule et s’est logée dans sa colonne vertébrale.

Pour garder le lien, il partage d’anciennes photos de lui sur WhatsApp — des souvenirs de celui qu’il était, et de celui qu’il est toujours au fond de lui.
