<div><strong>Where climate justice meets ecosystem restoration: Support Mangroves &amp; Bees in Mozambique</strong>

<div>When our member Antonia Teixeira Chikono returns from the beach in Nhangau on Fridays, she looks exhausted but happy, her rubber boots are muddy, her voice is cracking. Every week, she plants 1500 trees with the women and fishermen from the village. "The mangroves are our best hope," she says. After the last storm surge, it became clear to Antonia: She can't rely on the government for climate protection. If something is to change, she has to make it happen herself. And something has to change: According to climate science, global temperature rise will make extreme weather events such as storms and flooding more frequent and more severe.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>When Tropical Storm Idai slammed into the South East coast of Africa in 2019, hundreds of thousands were left homeless. Idai was the deadliest storm on record to hit Mozambique. "The hardest time was the weeks that followed the storm," says Antonia Teixeira, "because we women had to take care of the children and the food." It's a structural problem: Around the world, women like Antonia suffer most from the consequences of the climate crisis, while they have contributed the least to its escalation.

<div><br />
</div>
<div>The solidarity of the international feminist movement to rebuild homes and infrastructure was very needed: schools across Sófala region had no roofs for over a year, and not all hospitals had been rebuilt when the pandemic spread across Mozambique. Preventing the next storm from destroying all houses again, Antonia and her husband Vengai Chikono founded the "Mangrove Committee." Whether in the village pub, in the schoolyard, after church, they literally spread the word about the superpower of mangroves everywhere: Mangroves both absorb CO2 and func-tion as wavebreakers for future storms. Depending on the density of the foliage, mangrove for-ests can reduce inland flooding by up to 40 percent.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Every week, Antonia Teixeira summons the Mangrove Committee, and her vision is slowly taking shape: Together, they have already planted nearly 9 million seeds, a forest growing on 900 hectares - an area larger than 1,000 soccer fields.
</div>
<div><br />
</div><img alt="" media_type="3" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/69698069_167008109357902_r." width="100%" />
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Whether the seedlings will withstand the next storm is uncertain. It's a race against time, and many miles along the beach are still bare. In the long run, the committee cannot take on the mission of reforestation on a voluntary basis. That's why Antonia Teixeira has developed a business model for the villagers:
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>If bees pollinate the mangroves, the members of the committee can harvest the honey. Once there are enough beehives in the mangroves, they could sell 1,200 liters every for months - a good extra income for the women. The only thing that’s missing is some seed funding for beekeeping knowledge and the hives. The model is a win-win-win situation that increases biodiversity on the coast, creates a sustainable income for the committee members and protects the whole region from the consequences of the climate crisis.

<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>This is how your donation helps to grow hope in times of crisis:</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>30 Euro = one collective lunch break for the Mangrove Committee volunteers
</div>
<div>57 Euro (3500,00 Meticals) = one beehive with a queen
</div>
<div>160 Euro = beekeeping training for 20 people
</div>
<div>200 Euro = collective transportation costs per month
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The Mangrove Commitee wants to bring 100 beehives to the mangroves until spring 2023. To become an inspiration for other villages along the coast of Sofala province, Vengai Chikono plans to train a larger number of people every month in beekeeping. To make these efforts truly sustainable, the Commitee has been working on a 3-year-plan that includes an outreach campaign to other communities to join the reforestation effort. While the planting actions will remain voluntary work until bigger funding is available, developing the business plan of the honey cooperative and strengthening the collaborations with students and researchers from the Universities of Beira and Maputo will be more efficient once this volunteers job turns into a paid position.

<div>Your solidarity makes a huge difference in times of climate crisis and species extinction!

<div><br />
</div>
<div>Transparency: The Mangrove Committee is not an NGO, but a grassroots movement in which there are no paid positions yet - therefore there are no administrative costs at the moment. Every donation is transferred directly to Mozambique through the account of a friend supporting An-tonia’s feminist association GMPIS in Nhangau. This fundraiser was created with the support of climate journalist Theresa Leisgang, who learned about the project during her research for the book "Zwei am Puls der Erde: Eine Reise zu den Schauplätzen der Klimakrise und warum es trotz allem Hoffnung gibt" (Randomhouse, 2021).

</div>
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><br />
</div><img alt="" media_type="3" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/69698069_1670394701311774_r." width="100%" />
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div>200 Euro fallen für Transportkosten pro Monat an
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
