My name is Crystal Wheeling, and my life changed dramatically after a spinal fusion surgery in September 2023. Before this, my husband and I both served in law enforcement in Maryland—he dedicated 25 years to the Harford County Sheriff’s Department, and I spent 10 years there as well. We met on the job, and after years of service, we moved to Florida to start a new chapter. Life was good, filled with family, caring for our animals, and enjoying time with our grandchildren.

 Since my surgery, things have been incredibly difficult. The surgeon who performed my procedure was suspended shortly after, and I was left without proper follow-up care. Despite my efforts—physical therapy, injections, and pain management—I’m still in constant pain and my mobility is limited. My husband now works nights to support us, while also caring for me, our home, and our small farm. The medical bills keep piling up, and we’ve had to rely on credit cards for repairs and medical supplies. On top of this, our car’s transmission is failing, making it even harder to get to appointments and manage daily life.

I dream of having a lightweight wheelchair and a ramp so I can safely spend time outside with my grandchildren and animals again.
