<div>Hi, my name is Alex Footman. I'm a documentary filmmaker and journalist working at Deutsche Welle. I'm here on behalf of my friend Mohammad, who needs help escaping Afghanistan.

<div>I met Mohammad in 2014 while living in Kabul and have been in touch with him ever since. I have personally helped him financially to overcome various hurdles, and he has my full confidence and trust. But this last hurdle to his family's safety requires us to cast a wider net in asking for donations.

<div>We urgently need your help to raise $10,000 to save Mohammad and his family, who are trapped in Afghanistan under increasingly dire conditions. Mohammad, a courageous father of four, including a newborn baby, has devoted his life to protecting others. During the War in Afghanistan, he risked everything to prevent a suicide bombing attack on a German army base, saving countless lives.

<div>In another incident documented in the photo above, Mohammad's vehicle was attacked while he was working as a translator for a women's police training course:

<div>"In one of the districts in Kunduz, in a very remote village, our vehicle was struck by an IED and we were surrounded by enemies. Once our vehicle was disabled, I took immediate action and suggested calling the Afghan Police headquarters for assistance. We were unable to move forward or backward due to the IED. The Afghan police arrived and provided cover for us until late into the night. At midnight, German special forces arrived and defused the remaining IEDs, allowing us to safely return to the base."

<div>Despite his heroism, Mohammad now faces an unimaginable threat. The Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan has made life extremely dangerous for him and his family. As a result of his actions, he is a marked man. I have not disclosed his full name for his safety. He is on a waiting list for Germany's Federal Admission Program for Afghanistan, but they cannot extract him directly from Afghanistan. In order to ensure the safety of his wife and children he first must reach to Pakistan, but the costs involved are far beyond the family's means.

<div>Mohammad's newborn daughter urgently needs a passport, and the cost of obtaining this, along with the necessary visas to enter Pakistan, has skyrocketed since the Taliban’s return to power. The process is further complicated by the instability in the region, where every step towards safety is laden with risk and expense.

<div>The $10,000 we are trying to raise will cover the essential costs of passports, visas, and the logistics required to safely transport Mohammad, his wife, and their four children out of Afghanistan. These funds will go directly towards ensuring this family’s safe passage, giving them a chance to start over in a place where they are not living under constant threat.

<div>Mohammad’s story is not just another statistic in the ongoing crisis; it has been verified and reported by Germany's international broadcaster Deutsche Welle. His bravery in the face of danger is commendable, and now he needs our help to protect his own family.

<div>"In einem der Bezirke von Kundus, in einem sehr abgelegenen Dorf, wurde unser Fahrzeug von einer Sprengfalle getroffen und wir waren von Feinden umzingelt. Als unser Fahrzeug außer Gefecht gesetzt war, habe ich sofort gehandelt und vorgeschlagen, das Hauptquartier der afghanischen Polizei um Hilfe zu bitten. Wegen der Bombe konnten wir uns weder vorwärts noch rückwärts bewegen. Die afghanische Polizei traf ein und gab uns bis spät in die Nacht hinein Deckung. Um Mitternacht trafen deutsche Spezialkräfte ein und entschärften die restlichen Sprengsätze.

<div>Trotz seines Heldentums ist Mohammad nun einer unvorstellbaren Bedrohung ausgesetzt. Die Machtübernahme der Taliban in Afghanistan hat das Leben für ihn und seine Familie extrem gefährlich gemacht. Aufgrund seiner Taten ist er ein gesuchter Mann. Zu seiner Sicherheit habe ich seinen vollen Namen nicht genannt. Er steht auf einer Warteliste für das Bundesaufnahmeprogramm für Afghanistan, kann aber nicht direkt aus Afghanistan ausreisen.
