<div>Behind the scenes, it was a staged demo, a Theranos-style fraud designed to dazzle donors, government officials, journalists, and the public.

<div><strong>At the same time:</strong>

<li>MIT accepted donations tied to Jeffrey Epstein.

<li>The project dumped wastewater allegedly 1,000× above legal nitrogen/nitrate limits, linked to “blue baby syndrome” and other health risks.

<li>Schoolchildren, <a href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/mit-media-lab-scientist-used-syrian-refugees-to-tout-food-computerstarget=_blankrel=noreferrer" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Syrian refugees</a>, and even celebrities were used as showcases to sell the fraud.

<div>When Dr. Babak Babakinejad, MIT Research Scientist and lead on the project, reported these fabricated demonstrations, <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/mit-media-lab-kept-regulators-in-the-dark-dumped-chemicals-in-excess-of-legal-limittarget=_blankrel=noreferrer" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">toxic dumping</a>, and fraudulent fundraising, including written warnings to MIT’s Office of General Counsel, MIT retaliated by firing him.
