<div>On January 10, 2023, six-year-old Ryan was struck by a car while walking in his neighborhood with his father, Hamdan. Ryan suffered severe injuries to his lungs, stomach, head, and back, including a spinal cord injury that has left him paralyzed below the neck. Ryan has now been in the hospital for nearly six months, where he is reliant on a ventilator to breathe. He is unable to move his lower and upper limbs and has been confined to a hospital bed for nearly half a year. As a six-year-old boy, he is dealing with unimaginable pain, confusion, and fear. He is in desperate and urgent need of rehabilitative services that could significantly improve his quality of life.

<div>Ryan is the son of Hamdan Al Jaeiwi, a disabled Palestinian refugee who has touched the hearts of thousands of international visitors to Bethlehem. Throughout his life, Hamdan has worked tirelessly to educate travelers about the occupation and to advocate for the rights of Palestinians, especially those with disabilities. Over the years, Hamdan has welcomed visitors of all religions and backgrounds to Palestine with warmth and kindness. His insights, openness, and advocacy for the most vulnerable members of Palestinian society have changed lives and have inspired people from around the world.

<div>Hamdan and his family are from Dheisheih refugee camp in the West Bank. As Palestinians living under military occupation, they are navigating a complex permit system, where Hamdan depends upon Israeli military authorization to cross the checkpoint into Jerusalem to be at the hospital with his son. In addition to the logistical and financial costs that arise from the situation, they must also navigate a medical system in a place where they do not speak the language and are often treated with suspicion.

<div>On top of these obstacles, Hamdan and his wife are under incredible financial strain. Due to the pandemic, Hamdan lost most of his work in the tourism industry and now he must devote himself to Ryan’s fulltime care. For months, Hamdan and his wife have been living in Ryan’s hospital room since they are unable to afford an accessible apartment in Jerusalem. They are also struggling to manage basic needs like groceries and transportation due to both limited financial resources as well as Hamdan’s own physical limitations. Hamdan’s limited mobility and reliance on crutches has also made it hard for him to do things like turning Ryan in his hospital bed, which has led to bed sores and infections.

<div>The family is in desperate need of support to provide Ryan with necessary care to recover from his injuries. Hamdan is exploring a variety of options for long-term rehabilitate care, each of which will require significant financial resources. Because Ryan’s accident occurred in the Palestinian territories where there are no facilities that can address Ryan’s medical needs, the family will require substantial resources to pay for his future medical expenses. As a parent and as someone who has spent his own life overcoming the challenges of being paraplegic, Hamdan is fighting with all he has to give his son the best chance of recovering from this accident. He and his family are deeply grateful for any support for Ryan as he struggles to survive through this life-altering accident.
