<div>Die Diagnose: Instabile Halswirbelsäule und ein Absinken des Schädels. Dadurch wird der Hirnstamm gequetscht und die Atemfunktion setzt aus.

<div>Die einzige Möglichkeit, die Carina jetzt noch bleibt, ist eine Versteifung der Halswirbelsäule. Da Carina zudem am Ehlers-Danlos-Syndrom leidet, gibt es weltweit nur 3 Spezialisten, die diese Operation durchführen können. Die Krankenkasse übernimmt die Kosten jedoch leider nicht.

<div>In den letzten Jahren hat sich Carinas Gesundheitszustand zusehends verschlechtert. Immer häufiger sind die Schmerzen so stark, dass sie nicht mehr auszuhalten sind. Schmerzfreie Zeiten gibt es gar nicht mehr. An vielen Tagen ist die Erschöpfung so groß, dass Carina nicht einmal aufstehen kann. Ihr bleiben meist nur ca. 2 Stunden am Tag, in denen sie aktiv etwas machen kann und sich nicht ausruhen muss. Auch die Sprache und das Sehvermögen sind stark beeinträchtigt. Carinas Augen können nicht mehr richtig fokussieren, sodass sie nur mit großer Anstrengung lesen und am Computer arbeiten kann. Zudem verliert Carina immer mehr Kraft in den Armen und Händen. Schon jetzt kann sie beispielsweise viele Türen nicht mehr selber öffnen. Bisher konnte sie sich zum Glück ihr Hobby, das Klavierspielen, teilweise erhalten.

<div>Ich habe über Jahre mit ansehen müssen, wie Carina immer mehr von ihrem Leben verloren hat. Sie war angehende Kinder- und Jugendpsychologin und hat ein unglaubliches Talent, auf junge Menschen zuzugehen und ihnen mit Empathie und Aufgeschlossenheit zu begegnen und zu helfen. Ich wünsche Carina, dass sie endlich die Möglichkeit bekommt, ihre Begabung voll auszuschöpfen und zu teilen.

<div>Trotz all dieser Herausforderungen hat Carina nie den Lebensmut verloren und kämpft für diese OP, für ein selbstbestimmtes Leben ohne anhaltende Schmerzen und ohne die ständige Gefahr, zu ersticken oder irreversible Hirnschäden zu erleiden. Ihr großes Ziel ist es, endlich wieder am Leben teilhaben zu können und zu arbeiten.

<div>Your worst nightmare: Your breathing stops while you are fully conscious and you feel yourself slowly suffocating. This happens to my sister Carina again and again.

<div>The diagnosis: Craniocervical instability and cranial settling. As a result, the brain stem is being compressed and the respiratory function fails.

<div>The only viable option left for Carina is a fusion of the cervical spine. Since Carina also suffers from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, there are only 3 specialists in the world who can perform this surgery. Unfortunately, her health insurance does not cover the costs.

<div>In recent years, Carina's health has deteriorated noticeably. More and more often, her pain is so severe that it becomes unbearable. Pain-free periods no longer exist. On many days, Carina is so exhausted that she cannot even get up. Usually she only has about 2 hours a day in which she can actively do something and does not need to rest. Her speech and vision are also severely impaired. Carina's eyes can no longer focus properly, so that it takes great effort for her to read or work on the computer. In addition, Carina is losing more and more strength in her arms and hands. It has already become difficult for her to open some doors, for example. On good days, however, she is still able to pursue her hobby, playing the piano.

<div>Over the years, I have had to watch Carina lose more and more quality of life. She was an aspiring child and adolescent psychologist and has an incredible talent for approaching young people empathetically and open-minded, helping them in their personal development. My wish is for Carina to finally get the opportunity to fully employ and share her talent.

<div>Despite all these challenges, Carina has never lost her will to live and fight: for this surgery, for a self-determined life without persistent pain and without the constant threat of suffocation or irreversible brain damage. Her biggest goal is to finally be able to participate in life again and to work.
