Kerlin has been a beloved Jacksonian for 16 years, always willing to help his neighbors. <div>On Thursday, June 19, Kerlin went to work, like any other day. While performing duties assigned to him by his employer, he and his white supervisor were arrested by JPD. Kerlin’s white supervisor was promptly released, but Kerlin was detained in jail without a charge. This stark discrepancy is emblematic of the racial bias embedded in the U.S.’s enforcement systems. The next day a county judge ordered for Kerlin to be released, but Sheriff Tyree refused to release Kerlin. Kerlin was then taken into ICE custody despite never having been charged with a crime and being detained after a judge ordered his release.
