<div>My mother-in-law, <strong>Jana Nelson</strong>, suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke due to a stent that was placed in her carotid artery in March. She has had several days of ongoing seizures and a brain bleed. She was in and out of the CCU at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines for 40 days.

<div>The doctors in the hospital told us it would take 3 months for the blood to absorb back into her brain and until that time, we would not know the full extent of her brain injury. They told us that she would require at least 90 days of in-patient physical, occupational, and speech therapy. After less than 2 weeks in a skilled nursing facility, her insurance decided to cut off her recovery care and switch her to long-term care, which is not covered by her insurance.

<div><strong>Her care will cost $10k per month, and her life savings will be gone in less than 4 months.</strong> Mike and I have also gone through all of our savings, paying for both her care and our missed work due to this event. We are hoping to extend her care for at least 1 month to prepare to bring her back home with us. Once she comes home, I will stop working and become her full-time caregiver to hopefully stretch her savings to last up to 2 years, rather than a few months.
