<div>Not poverty. Informality: a systemic insecurity, lack of affordability, slow impoverishment — the inability to prove what you own, who you are, or what is owed to you. It locks people out of the formal economy. Inflexible and overwhelming bureaucratic processes strips people of the ability to keep up…, register a business, enforce an agreement, secure a loan, or pass down what they have built to their children. It traps them in the shadows of their own societies. It is the defining crisis of our era, and almost no one is talking about it.

<div>Informality spreads. It hollows out the middle class in rich countries as quickly as it traps people in poorer ones. A street vendor n Lagos, a shopkeeper in Colombo, a freelancer in Athens or Berlin, a gig worker in Chicago, and many trafficked refugees — all share the same condition. Our work today spans Germany, Greece, the UK, the United States, Latin America, Tunisia, Nigeria, India, and Sri Lanka. Informality respects no border.
