BLUE TIBET: SAVE ASIA'S WATER RESERVOIR

The Tibetan plateau has the largest glaciers and snow masses beyond the North and South Poles. Some of the largest rivers in Asia have its source from them. Almost 2 billion people depend on the fresh water that rises here. This is why the region is also known as the “Third Pole” or “Asia's water reservoir”.

However, this region is facing increasing threats: rising temperatures, soil erosion, pollution of rivers and lakes. Mining, industry and expanding agriculture are causing environmental pollution and endangering the rich biodiversity. Polluted rivers contaminate the soil and poison the animals. The region reacts very sensitively to climate change: nowhere else are the glaciers melting faster than here. However, the short-term, catastrophic floods could be followed by a permanent water shortage that would have repercussions for the entire continent.

The Chinese government is exploiting Tibet's water resources in an authoritarian and power-political manner. The populations of India, Vietnam, Nepal and many other Asian countries depend on water from the Tibetan plateau for drinking water, hygiene, agriculture and energy. However, the Chinese government refuses to negotiate fair agreements on distribution with the countries downstream or to join the UN Water Convention. Therefore many experts see transregional water conflicts on the horizon.

The Tibet Initiative Deutschland has been campaigning for a safe, clean and livable Tibetan landscape for decades. With the Blue Tibet campaign, we want to contribute in educating the German population about the plight on the Tibetan plateau. We produce information material, plan campaigns, organize panel discussions, set up petitions and want to inform as many people as possible about the issue. We hope that you will support the Tibet Initiative Germany in starting a critical dialog about Tibet, the water reservoir of Asia, and support us with a donation.

The disclosure of the construction plans for the Medog project

Access for an independent commission of inquiry to assess the impact of the Medog project and comparable constructions

An immediate end to mining and infrastructure practices that have a massive impact on the environment

China's accession to the UN Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses

Involving the local population in decision-making processes

The release of all environmental activists and political prisoners

Recognizing Tibet as an integral part of the international climate debate to protect the Third Pole
