<div>My name is Art Edwards, and I'm reaching out with a heavy heart but a resilient spirit to share my story and ask for your support. In March 2024, my life took a terrifying turn when I began vomiting large volumes of blood at home. Rushed to the Overlake Hospital Emergency Room, I was diagnosed with a portal vein hemorrhage and had lost 46% of my blood volume. I was minutes away from cardiac arrest and death. Thanks to the quick actions of the medical team, I survived that night, but it marked the beginning of a grueling battle against Stage 4 liver disease.

<div>After stabilizing with blood transfusions, I was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where I spent three days receiving six units of blood and undergoing a banding procedure on my damaged esophagus.
</div>

<div>The Gastrointestinal Specialist, delivered the devastating diagnosis:

<div><strong>Stage 4 Liver Disease. </strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>My liver was severely damaged by cirrhosis, functioning at less than 20% capacity (approximately 80% cirrhosis). Without intervention, my life expectancy was just 2-6 months.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>However, a liver transplant could extend my life significantly, provided I continue my radical lifestyle changes—including a strict diet, regular exercise, and substantial weight reduction—which I've faithfully implemented since my release from the hospital. I am participating in a care program at the Washington State Gastrointestinal Care Program through Wa GI Clinic at Overlake Hospital.

<div>During my hospital stay, I also had 4.5 liters of fluid removed from my stomach due to ascites. In 2024 alone, I've undergone four endoscopy procedures and two in 2025. My next scheduled endoscopy is July 2026.

<div>Upon discharge, I immediately followed the recommendations of my GI Specialist, Nutritionist, and Primary Care Provider. I've adhered to a long list of prescribed medications (detailed in the medical summaries attached to this campaign) to manage my symptoms and prevent further complications.
</div>

</div>
<div>Tragically, there's no chance my liver will recover beyond its current 20% functionality. My risk of developing liver cancer and esophagus cancer has greatly increased and I have been completing ultrasound imaging (radiology) ever six months and blood panels to monitor my liver enzymes, which are elevated and my MELD (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease) score is currently 17. The MELD score is a ranking system to determine liver transplant urgency.

<div>I am now a candidate for a liver transplant, which offers my only path to restoring my health, extending my life expectancy, and reclaiming my sense of purpose and well-being.

<div>Yet, beyond the physical toll, I also grapple with PTSD and a range of other health issues that profoundly impact my daily life, making every day a challenge.
</div>

<div>As someone without insurance and having been designated as disabled, the financial burden of this critical liver transplant operation is overwhelming—estimated at up to $900,000-$1 million, covering surgery, hospital stays, medications, follow-up care, and related expenses. Without this procedure, my prognosis remains dire.
