<div>I am Colombian, a lawyer by profession, and almost 2 years ago I arrived in Melbourne, Australia, with a heart full of love for my mom, Myriam, the strongest, kindest, and most generous woman I know.

<div>She has been a single mother her entire life, tirelessly fighting to provide for us. Her home was always a refuge for anyone who needed it.

<div>"Where we eat for two, we eat for ten," she would say, and that is exactly how we lived—open doors, open hearts, always helping those in need.

<div>Never did I imagine I would have to write this.

<div>We never thought something like this could happen to us.
</div>

<div>On November 25, our house in Cúcuta, Colombia, was destroyed in a fire.
</div>
<div>It was not just a house—it was our home, our safe place, the heart of our family, full of love and memories.
</div>

</div>
<div>Neighbors called desperately as flames consumed everything. The firefighters did their best, but the fire destroyed almost everything:

<div>* The roof burned and partially collapsed
</div>
<div>* Water, gas, and electrical systems were destroyed
</div>
<div>* Tiles cracked and walls crumbled
</div>
<div>* The second floor collapsed
</div>
<div>* Irreplaceable documents—house deeds, my diploma, family papers—were reduced to ashes
</div>
<div>* Clothing, shoes, appliances, and lifelong memories disappeared
</div>

<div>So far, we have managed to use our savings and some help from close family, but this is not enough to rebuild the house or cover my mom’s basic needs.
</div>
<div>We tried applying for assistance from the local government and the mayor’s office, but we only received silence. The Victims’ Assistance Unit has also not provided any support.
</div>

</div>
<div>Today, the house is uninhabitable.
</div>
<div>My mom is temporarily living with an aunt who kindly welcomed her, but it is not her home, not her safe space… not her life.
</div>
<div>And I am here, in Australia… heartbroken, unable to hug her, unable to help rebuild the pieces of her life, unable to say “don’t worry, I’m here” while she cries.
</div>

<div>I work tirelessly here, but as an international student I am limited by the hours my visa allows. I must cover school, rent, food, and transportation. What I can send my mom is not enough to face a tragedy of this magnitude.
</div>

</div>
<div>That is why today, we need your help.

<div>Jamás imaginé que tendría que escribir estas palabras. Jamás pensamos que algo así nos podría pasar.

<div>El 25 de noviembre, en Cúcuta, Colombia, nuestra casa —nuestro hogar, nuestro nido, el lugar donde siempre reinó el amor— se incendió y quedó prácticamente destruida.

<div>Los vecinos llamaron desesperados mientras las llamas devoraban nuestra vida. Los bomberos hicieron lo que pudieron, pero el fuego arrasó casi todo:

<div>* Las tuberías de agua, gas y electricidad reventaron
</div>
<div>* Las baldosas estallaron por el calor

<div>* Documentos irremplazables —las escrituras, mi diploma, papeles familiares— se hicieron cenizas

<div>Hasta ahora hemos podido utilizar nuestros ahorros y algo de ayuda de familiares cercanos, pero esto no alcanza para reconstruir la casa ni cubrir las necesidades básicas de mi mamá.

<div>Intentamos solicitar apoyo a la alcaldía y la gobernación, pero solo recibimos silencio. La Unidad de Reparación de Víctimas tampoco nos ha brindado ayuda.

<div>Hoy, la casa está inhabitable.
</div>
<div>Mi mamá vive temporalmente en casa de una tía que la acogió con cariño, pero no es su hogar, no es su espacio seguro… no es lo suyo.
</div>
<div>Y yo estoy aquí, en Australia… con el corazón roto, sin poder abrazarla, sin poder ayudarla a recoger los pedazos de su vida, sin poder decirle “tranquila, yo estoy aquí” mientras llora.

<div>Trabajo aquí con el alma, pero como estudiante internacional solo puedo cumplir las horas que mi visa me permite. Debo cubrir colegio, hospedaje, comida y transporte. Lo que logro enviarle no alcanza para enfrentar una tragedia de esta magnitud.
