<div>If you are on this page, it’s because you’ve heard about the terrible situation of political prisoners in Nicaragua that has been ongoing since 2018.

<div>Pressure within Nicaragua and internationally has contributed significantly to the release of many political prisoners in recent years, but a significant number are currently in jail.  Some have not been seen or heard off since their abduction by the regime and are classified as ‘disappeared’.

<div>In February 2023, 222 political prisoners were released as were 135 in September 2024.   Now in forced exile, they have been stripped of their Nicaraguan nationality and the Ortega-Murillo has pursued a policy of confiscation of their homes, businesses and livelihoods.

<div>Since September 2024, however, the number has again steadily increased and there are now around 100 political prisoners being held illegally and in appalling conditions in Nicaragua’s jails and prisons.
</div>

<div>Most political prisoners in Nicaragua are from low-income families who don’t have the financial resources to pay for the supplies they are expected to provide for their imprisoned loved one: food, medicines, toiletries, nutritional supplements, clothing, etc. For those who live far away from the prison or jail where their family member is being held, transportation costs are an extra burden.

<div>Si estás en esta página es porque has oído hablar de la terrible situación de las personas presas políticas en Nicaragua que se vive desde 2018.

<div>La presión dentro de Nicaragua y a nivel internacional ha contribuido significativamente a la liberación de muchas de ellas en los últimos años, pero un número significativo se encuentra actualmente en la cárcel. Varias de las personas presas políticas no se han visto ni se tiene noticias de ellas desde que fueron secuestradas por el régimen, y están clasificadas como "desaparecidas".

<div>En febrero de 2023, se excarceló a 222 presos/as político/as y a 135 más en septiembre de 2024. Ahora, en exilio forzado, han sido despojados/as de su nacionalidad nicaragüense y los Ortega-Murillo han seguido una política de confiscación de sus casas, negocios y medios de vida. Sin embargo, desde septiembre de 2024, el número ha vuelto a aumentar de forma constante y ahora hay alrededor de 100 presos y presas políticos/as recluidos/as ilegalmente y en condiciones deplorables en las cárceles de Nicaragua.

<div>La mayoría de las personas presas políticas en Nicaragua provienen de familias de bajos ingresos que no tienen los recursos financieros para pagar los suministros que se espera que proporcionen a su ser querido encarcelado: comida, medicamentos, artículos de higiene y limpieza, suplementos nutricionales, ropa, etc. Algunas familias viven lejos de la prisión o cárcel donde está detenido su familiar, los costos de transporte son una carga adicional.
