<div>We are a German-Mexican family who, until April of this year, lived in Germany. We came to Mexico on vacation—and here our lives changed forever. We were in a terrible car accident. Our son Oliver, only 2 years old, has been quadriplegic ever since.

<div>In early July, we traveled to Chicago, where Oliver underwent two major surgeries in less than three days. His spine had to be fused to his skull, as his head was no longer fixed to his body. Complications followed: Oliver suffered a stroke and two cardiac arrests. After 37 long days in the hospital, he was finally discharged—this time to our new home in Mexico.

<div>The medical bill in the U.S. reached 2 million dollars, and we had no insurance coverage there.

</div>
<div>And yet, despite everything, Oliver has already shown signs of hope. Against all odds, he has regained some movement in his extremities and even some sensation. Every day, we fight to give him every possible chance to recover and live a meaningful life. He now needs 24/7 care, supported by nurses and therapists who accompany him through rehabilitation.

<div>It breaks our hearts to ask for help, but we have no other choice. Our love for our son is greater than our pride.

<div>Thanks to this GoFundMe—created by our friends immediately after the accident—we have been able to pay for Oliver’s ventilator, intensive care, and medical equipment, while also giving our twins a stable home life in the middle of this crisis.

<div>Wir sind eine deutsch-mexikanische Familie, die bis April dieses Jahres in Deutschland lebte. Wir kamen für einen Urlaub nach Mexiko – und hier veränderte sich unser Leben für immer. Wir hatten einen schweren Autounfall.

<div>Unser Sohn Oliver, gerade einmal 2 Jahre alt, ist seitdem querschnittsgelähmt.

<div>Anfang Juli reisten wir nach Chicago, wo Oliver innerhalb von weniger als drei Tagen zwei große Operationen über sich ergehen lassen musste. Seine Wirbelsäule musste mit seinem Schädel verbunden werden, da sein Kopf nicht mehr mit dem Körper fixiert war. Doch es kam zu Komplikationen: Oliver erlitt einen Schlaganfall und zwei Herzstillstände. Nach 37 langen Tagen im Krankenhaus durfte er endlich entlassen werden – in unser neues Zuhause in Mexiko.

<div>Die Krankenhausrechnung in den USA belief sich auf 2 Millionen Dollar, und wir hatten dort keine Versicherung.

<div>Und doch hat Oliver trotz allem schon Zeichen der Hoffnung gezeigt. Entgegen aller Prognosen hat er etwas Bewegung in seinen Gliedmaßen und auch etwas Gefühl zurückgewonnen. Jeden Tag kämpfen wir dafür, ihm jede mögliche Chance auf Genesung und ein erfülltes Leben zu geben. Er benötigt nun rund um die Uhr Betreuung durch Krankenschwestern und Therapeuten, die ihn in seiner Rehabilitation unterstützen.

<div>Es bricht uns das Herz, um Hilfe bitten zu müssen, aber wir haben keine andere Wahl. Unsere Liebe zu unserem Sohn ist größer als unser Stolz.

<div>A principios de julio viajamos a Chicago, donde Oliver fue sometido a dos cirugías mayores en menos de tres días. Su columna tuvo que ser fijada a su cráneo, ya que su cabeza ya no estaba unida a su cuerpo. Después vinieron complicaciones: Oliver sufrió un derrame cerebral y dos paros cardíacos. Finalmente, después de 37 largos días en el hospital, fue dado de alta—esta vez para ir a nuestro nuevo hogar en México.

<div>La cuenta médica en Estados Unidos alcanzó los 2 millones de dólares, sin contar con ningún seguro médico allá.

<div>Y sin embargo, a pesar de todo, Oliver ya ha mostrado señales de esperanza. Contra todo pronóstico, ha recuperado algo de movimiento en sus extremidades e incluso algo de sensibilidad. Cada día luchamos por darle todas las oportunidades posibles de recuperarse y tener una vida plena. Ahora necesita cuidados las 24 horas, apoyado por enfermeras y terapeutas que lo acompañan en su rehabilitación.

<div>Nos duele profundamente pedir ayuda, pero no tenemos otra opción. Nuestro amor por nuestro hijo es más grande que nuestro orgullo.
