Monty Young - Medical aid in Kenya.
About me:
Hello everyone, my name is Monty Young. Let me tell you a little about myself. I am a Santa Ana fire academy graduate with certifications including rescue systems, first responder, low angle rescue, and hazardous materials among many others. In the past I have worked as a Rescue Technician and Safety Officer in Long Beach and Carson. I am currently an Emergency Medical Technician and have been working for an ambulance company for five years. I am also a CPR instructor through the American Heart Association and have over 250 documented classes taught over a four year period. Finally, I am a student at CSUF completing a Health Science degree with the determination to finish medical school afterwards.
My goal:
Health care needs in Africa are staggering and medical care is often sub-standard. The prevalence of HIV and other infectious and preventable diseases takes its toll in the lives of thousands each year. These realities compel us as medical professionals, humanitarians, and global citizens to do what is necessary to provide quality health care and help prevent needless death.
From May 30th to July 3rd I will be providing medical aid in varying regions of Kenya, including the largest slum in Africa called Kibera. I will be living with an African host family who are willing to have me in their home for over a month. The clinics which I will work at are generally within 30 minutes walking distance from where I will live. Trips to Kibera slum will be by bus.
Expenses:
This medical aid program is a volunteer mission. All the necessary funding to help me get out there to provide my services will come out of my own pocket. Any donations will be greatly appreciated =). Below is a list of the different expenses of the trip.
Immunizations: Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Polio booster, Tetanus, and Diptheria. $200
Medications: Malaria pills and cipro (antibiotic). $30
Airfare: $1200
Food and Water: $400
Host family accommodation: $800
Others (Scrubs uniform, toiletries, baby wipes, anti-diahrreal, mosquito nets, bug repellant, sun screen, clothing, etc.): Approximately $150-$200
Transportation in Kenya: $150
Total cost of volunteer work with no extracurricular activities: $2980
Donation Rewards:
Those who donate $50 or more will receive all photos and videos taken on the trip.
Those who donate $100 or more will receive all photos and videos taken on the trip. They will also receive a copy of my handwritten diary detailing my experiences while in Kenya.
