Fundacion MIR Clean Water Project

Hello everyone,
Fundacion Mir serves over 1200 students and every year they are forced to spend thousands of dollars on bringing clean drinking water to the school. With our help, not only can students have clean tap water, but Fundacion Mir will be able to use that money on other projects to improve their students academic experience.
We are students at Florida International University and members of UNICEF@FIU and Alternative Breaks. UNICEF is a non-profit organization that works to raise awareness about global poverty and advocates for issues that affect children. UNICEF aims to decrease the number of children dying from preventable causes to zero. Alternative Breaks gives students from FIU the chance to travel around the world to provide service-learning through direct service in hopes of spreading education and immersing in diverse cultures and environments.
In order for UNICEF@FIU to effectively partake in these missions, we are conducting several projects this school year. One of these projects will be a collaboration with Alternative Breaks with the hopes of installing a water filtration system in a school in the Dominican Republic founded by Fundacion Mir.
So, why the Dominican Republic? Much of the Dominican Republic lacks the infrastructure to process and filter water. This leaves its populace, especially the poor, with little access to clean water to be used for hygiene, drinking, and sanitation.
To fulfill this mission, we will also be working with MD Pumps. They will be providing the water filtration system as well as working on site with us in order to ensure proper installation. They are a company located in Hiahleah, Florida, seeking to involve themselves in more service-oriented work such as our project.
In order for us to successfully carry out this mission, we need financial aid. By May 2015, we need to raise $6,200. This money will be used to provide water filtration systems for BOTH campuses of the school, one located in the city and the other in the country. $2975 will be used for the country campus and the other $3223 will be used for the city campus.
Any donation that can be given is a huge contribution to our project and will go to puchasing the necessary materials for the filtration system including: carbon filters, water softeners with salt tanks, and UV light systems.
