Dreaming of Columbia University

Ciao a tutti, mi chiamo Ivan, ho 26 anni e sogno di lavorare nel cinema dall'età di 10 anni.
Ho lanciato questa campagna di raccolta fondi perché il giorno 16 marzo 2016 mi hanno informato di essere stato ammesso tra i pochissimi posti a disposizione al Master di Film Producing presso la Columbia University di New York.
La Columbia offre uno dei migliori corsi in filmmaking degli Stati Uniti ed è riconosciuta come una delle più prestigiose università al mondo, ed essere stato scelto è per me motivo di grandissimo orgoglio.
L'OBIETTIVO
Da studente internazionale dovrò dimostrare di avere abbastanza fondi per pagare almeno il primo anno di tasse + spese di vita, e questo si approssima intorno ai 90mila euro.
È tantissimo, lo so, ma questo non dovrebbe bloccare una persona dal contribuire. Sono ben consapevole che è difficile, ma se ho aperto comunque questa pagina è perché credo che si possa fare.
E continuerò a crederlo fino all’ultimo giorno di campagna perché per me vorrebbe dire poter realizzare il sogno di una vita, il sogno per il quale lotto da quando ho lasciato casa a 19 anni per trasferirmi a Roma.

LA MIA STORIA IN "BREVE".
Ognuno di noi, giorno dopo giorno, vive quelli che in inglese vengono chiamati "turning point", momenti cruciali o punti di svolta, insomma eventi che prendono la nostra vita e la indirizzano verso nuovi obiettivi. E la mia vita, dal 2008 ad oggi, ne è stata piena zeppa.
Personalmente, so di voler lavorare nel cinema da quando avevo 10 anni. Non che lo sapessi concretamente, ma lo sentivo. Ne sono sempre stato affascinato, più di qualsiasi altra cosa al mondo.
Finito il liceo, nel 2008 provai il bisogno di lasciare la mia città natia, Torre Annunziata, in provincia di Napoli, e trasferirmi a Roma per studiare "Cinema e arti della visione".
Mi sono laureato nel novembre del 2011 e pochi mesi dopo decisi di provare un'ulteriore avventura, stavolta ad Hollywood. Ho vissuto a Los Angeles per 6 mesi, dopodichè decisi di iscrivermi ad una scuola di inglese cosicché potessi rimanere più a lungo.
Quando però richiesi il visto, qualcosa andò storto e fui costretto a cambiare i piani. A quel punto mi tornò in mente un ragazzo che incontrai pochi giorni prima di tornare in Italia, e che dal nulla cominciò a parlarmi dell'Australia. Mi disse: "Lascia perdere l'America per ora. Vai a farti un'esperienza in Australia, e poi magari qui ci ritorni in futuro". Non badai mai tanto alle sue parole fino al giorno in cui fui costretto a lasciar perdere temporaneamente gli Stati Uniti.
Quello stesso pomeriggio, l'Australia venne casualmente tirata in ballo mentre chiacchieravo con un'amica, e capii che qualcosa mi stava dicendo che dovevo darci almeno una possibilità. Lessi del Working Holiday Visa, un visto che permette di vivere e lavorare in Australia per un anno.
15 giorni dopo atterravo a Perth, Western Australia.
Arrivai in Australia con pochi spiccioli e tanta voglia di fare esperienza. Per cercare lavoro mi affidai all'unico ragazzo che conoscevo che mi presentò in un ristorante, il cui proprietario era anche un aspirante produttore. Questa persona aveva una storia in mente, ma non aveva idea di come scrivere una sceneggiatura, né conoscesse sceneggiatori, e dopo aver letto un paio di miei script, me la commissionò.
Con i soldi guadagnati, mi iscrissi ad un corso di un anno presso la Sydney Film School.
Quando il corso cominciò ancora non sapevo esattamente cosa volessi fare. Credevo ancora che la mia strada fosse nella regia e sceneggiatura, ma poi ho avuto la possibilità di produrre tre cortometraggi, e provai in me qualcosa che non avevo mai provato prima. E sentii che dal quel momento volevo dedicarmi alla produzione più di quanto abbia mai voluto in passato dedicarmi alla regia.
Finita la scuola di cinema, dovevo decidere se tornare in Italia o rimanere in Australia per un terzo anno.
Decisi di rimanere.
E sette giorni dopo questa decisione, mentre vendevo biglietti al cinema dove lavoravo, conobbi casualmente un grande produttore americano che era a Sydney a produrre il nuovo film di Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge. Chiacchierammo soltanto per mezz'ora. Due mesi dopo ero sul set del film a lavorare per 9 settimane.
Durante le riprese, tra un fine settimane e l'altro, capii che dovevo cercare qualcosa che mi riportasse in America, e cercai i migliori corsi di produzione.
Trovai la Columbia, ed ora eccomi qui.
Perché voglio diventare produttore?
Perché onestamente parlando, voglio vedere un cambiamento nel cinema italiano. Certo, vi sto chiedendo di aiutarmi per poter andare in America ma questo è semplicemente perché lì l'industria cinematografica, soprattutto quella indipendente, ha tantissimo da insegnare, e io voglio imparare tutto quel che c'è da sapere per poter tornare un giorno in Italia con un bagaglio di esperienza tale da poter rispolverare le vere qualità del NOSTRO cinema, quello che oggigiorno pare possano fare solo pochi grandi artisti.
Cosa succede se non dovessi raggiungere la cifra?
Di certo non dissiperò i soldi accumulati.
Il lavoro del produttore è anche saper trovare strade alternative nel caso in cui non riesca a raggiungere la cifra che si era predisposto.
Ad esempio, dovessi raggiungere una cifra alta, ma non abbastanza alta per la Columbia, potrei provare ad investirli in qualche altra università, magari più avvicinabile in termini di retta. Tutto dipende da quanto riuscirò ad accumulare.
Ogni piccolo aiuto per questa campagna sarà altamente apprezzato dal profondo del cuore.

My name is Ivan, I'm 27 years old and I have always dreamed of working in the film industry since the age of 10.
- What I am raising the money for.
On March 16th 2016 I received a phone call in the middle of the night. It was one of the teachers of the Columbia University in New York informing me that I have been accepted in their Master course of Creative Producing.
Columbia offers one of the best filmmaking programs in the United States and it is recognized as one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
As an international student I will need to prove to have enough funds for at least the first year's tuition + living expenses in order to ask for a student visa, and that is estimated to be 90.870 US Dollars
(90.000 Euro counting the fees for GoFundMe).
I'm well aware that it's a lot, and that might stop people from contributing. But if everyone that reads this message donated the price of a beer or a coffee, I'd maybe reach the goal in a month or two.
It's tough, but I do believe it can be done, and I will keep believing it until the last day of campaign as for me having the chance to study at the Columbia would be the realization of a lifetime dream.
WHO I AM ADDRESSING THIS CAMPAIGN TO
I am addressing this message to entrepreneurs, artists, creatives of any kind, people that love movies and want to support the dream of a guy who wishes, one day, to go back to Italy and help its country's film industry to get back to the beautiful art that it used to be 50 years ago. But I am also talking to all those people who are now reading these lines. I know that most of you don't know me, but try to put yourself in my shoes for one minute, imagine to be one step away from your dream, and that you're unable to walk that step because of money. I'm not asking for much. Really, every small donation is highly accepted.
MY STORY (in brief).
I have known that I want to work in the film industry since I was 10 years old, although at the time I didn't know what exactly I wanted to do. I actually thought I wanted to be a director, being it the most prominent figure into a film production.
Finished high school, I left Torre Annunziata (near Napoli, in Southern Italy) to study for a bachelor's degree in Film Studies in Rome.
I graduated in November 2011 and I almost immediately left for Hollywood. During the 6 months that I lived in LA I got to understand a few important things that influenced my future decision of staying in America. One of them, for example, was that I wouldn't have gone far with my poor English. Hundreds of new scripts were getting written every day and I should have concentrated on improving the language before even thinking of competing with the thousands of other screenwriters there.
So I decided to set aside America for a bit and to go to Australia for one year. However, from one the years have then somehow become three.
I spent the first year working as a waiter to pay my bills until the day I met a person who commissioned me a feature-length script, and paid me enough to afford a one-year course in a Film School in Sydney, which I could have never afforded otherwise.
The second year I moved to Sydney. When the course began, I still thought I wanted to follow the path of directing, totally unaware of the rest of the production that floats behind the camera. At the Sydney Film School, though, I had the chance to produce two shorts and I immediately felt something I had never felt before: I felt that I was loving working as a producer much more than I have ever loved working as a director. Finally I had found a precise path to follow, and in which I was very good at, in that remote dream that at first was simply "to work in the film industry".
Once the course was over, I had to choose whether to extend my Visa for one more year, or to go back home like many of my international friends at school did. I decided to stay, and exactly one week later I met a great American film producer while I was selling movie tickets at Event Cinemas where I used to work.
This producer was in Sydney to work on Mel Gibson's last movie, Hacksaw Ridge. Honestly I had never seen this person, but for some reason he came to buy a ticket from me, and in the few seconds of the transaction he happened to mention L.A. and that he was a producer. I obviously started asking him questions uncaring of all the customers standing in the queue behind him. At the end of the movie I waited for him and we had a nice chat. Two days later I was at Fox Studios for an interview, and 3 months later I was on the set working for 9 weeks.
During the shoot I decided to look for a good college where I could close my study cycle with a Master in Film Producing, and I found the Columbia. I didn't have time to prepare more than one application, so I focused only on this prestigiuos college in New York.
It took the Admission Office 5 months to make a decision, but eventually they chose me, and now here I am, fighting for my future, and asking for your support.

- Why do I want to become a producer?
Because honestly speaking, I want to see fresh ideas, fresh movies in the Italian film industry. I want people to leave a cinema feeling that what they just saw has actually taught them something, something that will make them company on the way home, something that they will never forget. Plus I hope I will be able to go back to my home country one day with a huge baggage of experience to use all towards an improvement and renovation of the Italian cinema, so it can go back to being what it was 50 years ago.
- What happens to the money should I not reach the goal?
Obviously I'm not going to waste it. I have never been that kind of person. My parents have raised me teaching me the art of saving, and if I have been able to travel to USA two times, to Perth after that and then to study in Sydney it's just thanks to that.
After all, the job of the producer is also the find alternative ways should he not be able to find the money he intended to collect, and in case I was forced to say goodbye to Columbia in September, I could always try to find other good colleges to master the art of film producing. It all depends on how much I will be able to put together with this campaign.
