Lauren was diagnosed with a disease that occurs in less than 1% of the world’s population. She had six unneeded surgeries before the doctors found her true diagnosis. She was diagnosed with a Vascular Malformation in the fall of 2003.
Since then she has had over 60 procedures to reduce the vascular malformation. We have been traveling from our home in San Diego to the Denver area for over 11 years for these procedures.
As of January 2014 she had 20 to 25% left to treat, since then she has had 16 procedures. In March of 2015 another MRI was done and found, she was still at 20 to 25% left to treat. The vascular malformation is growing as fast as we treat it.
Lauren and I have decided to move to the Denver area for five months in order to have weekly procedures to get the “End of Treatment” stage. Lauren’s father and sister will stay behind in our home in San Diego. We are seeking funds to help offset the cost of the move, as well as, the copays for the hospital and the increased cost for her medication.
Vascular Malformation:
Vascular malformations constitute some of the most difficult disease entities that can be encountered in the practice of medicine. Vascular malformations are lesions that someone is born with. When all of us were growing in our very early stages in our mother’s womb, we consisted totally of primitive blood vessel, when the embryo begins to grow, primitive blood vessel are no longer adequate and they are replaced with new blood vessel system. There is a resorptive phase where these primitive blood vesels are reabsorbed. If they are not completely resorbed by this time, there is no further mechanism to resorb them. Therefore, they are incorporated into the body and babies are born with them. It is in essence a “glitch” that happens and can happen to anyone of us. These are very rare vascular lesions.
