Amy Sims was a role-model for teachers and students alike at our school in Washington Heights, New York City. For seven years she was an empowering presence at school, showing all of us what a strong, fearless and capable woman she was, inspiring us to be our best selves no matter what. She always had the smartest, most persuasive reasoning to back her cause, and did so with wit and sarcasm. Despite her hard edge, she knew exactly how to inspire laughter and a light-hearted spirit in everyone.
The day before her students were to take the Algebra 2/Trigonometry New York State Regents exam in 2013, I received a text from Amy, my friend and colleague, that she was going to the hospital. By the end of that day she was gone. This loss was an enormous blow to our school community.
Together with Amy's family and friends, I am establishing a memorial scholarship in Amy's name to continue to serve the students that she loved so dearly. Our goal is to be able to offer a scholarship to a Class of 2015 graduate from the high school where Amy was so deservingly respected and admired by her students, with the hope that we can raise enough to fund a yearly scholarship. The goal set on this page of $2500 is our first target, not a cap.
Amy inspired us with her brilliance, at times driving us totally crazy, while making us love her at the same time. We hope to honor her outsized presence in this world and in our lives by helping one deserving student at a time with this scholarship.
