Support LeftVoices Journalism

About Andrea Sears and LeftVoices (click here

Andrea has worked as a journalist in New York City for more than twenty years. For most of that time, she was the News Editor at WBAI/Pacifica radio, a listener sponsored station. Her early training was in the NPR style of broadcast journalism with an emphasis on high production values, intricate use of sound and descriptive writing.

Over time, her focus has shifted to the interview format, and her areas of specialization have been human rights, civil liberties, and constitutional law. She is familiar with, and regularly covers, a wide range of topics including the environment, healthcare, prison reform, city, state and local legislative issues and electoral politics. In her time as a radio producer, she has gone from wielding razor blades and ten-inch reels of analog tape, to rapid-fire editing of digital sound on computers.

Radio was once a major force within a rather limited media palette-"“radio and television for broadcasting, newspapers, books and magazines for print. Now it is just a small part of a rapidly growing mosaic of new media possibilities. Andrea strongly believes that journalism in general must be adaptable and open to innovations that advance its core function, to inform the public.

The one element Andrea brings to her work that cannot be digitally fabricated, is her passion for journalism, a passion that has only increased over the years.

Andrea needs our financial support in order to continue to produce high-quality journalism without becoming beholden to special interests of any kind.
