The generosity and sincerity of people have made this whole terrible ordeal so much easier. The support has really been unbelievable to a point where there are no words that can even begin to express the gratitude that we have. It's been amazing to see everyone come together for a fellow friend, trail/ultra runner, Ironman and a living-life-to-the-fullest activist.
A.P has his spine surgery this morning. Sandra and John were able to see him this morning before they rolled him into the OR. A.P said he was ready for the surgery. Please keep prayers coming for this long 5-6 hour surgery. God bless.
A.P finally asked about his bike. He looked at John and said "Oh, I hadn't thought about it, but how's my bike?" For anyone that knows Andrew and his LOVE for his bike will understand that this statement showed us that he is regaining some of his thought process.
Update from 8:30 visitation: Andrew Powell has been moved to an air bed. He was extremely nauseous due to the morphine. He was awake and he was asking questions. He had been asking about Frank all day so I told him with John Powell. He was extremely concerned and sad. He just kept saying Frank was such a good guy. He asked to see Kimberly Guinn and she was able to come and see him. When I left the room, he said "I'm going to get better."
No significant changes. They are possibly going to do another CT scan to check on an irregular image on a previous CT scan. They think that its a possible shadow since they couldn't move him or change his position on the previous scan. They will be moving him to an air bed to prevent skin breakdown since he is can't move around! He was super sedated and really sleepy. He wasn't able to talk to us since he was so sleepy. He was happy to see John Powell, Barbara Pennington, & Heather Trainor.
Wow, I cannot believe that we are already over $2,000. It truly is amazing. A.P is an inspiration to many and it's very clear that he's touched many in more ways than one.
I wanted to post an update that Sandra, his beautiful wife, posted...
Just left visitation time (30 minutes) with Andrew. there is not a lot to update at this time. The neurosurgeon is the only dr that has met with me this morning. The dr. Stated that his numbers/counts stayed consistent thru the night but his blood count dropped this morning. They are giving him units of blood at this time to get hem back up. The low counts are also causing some swelling of his muscles. He does continue to have feeling and sensation in his legs and feet. Once they get the counts consistent then they will schedule the surgery of his spine ( broken and dislocation of his spine- T12 on L1). I am waiting on updates from the ortho dr (for pelvic fracture and ankle fractures), cardiologists, & trauma dr. I will update after I meet with them. Andrew was able to talk to me and is very confused and unsure of what has happened. He is asking about Frank and I just don't have the courage to tell him yet. We are blessed to be surrounded by tons of love and prayers. My family needs them and they are helping us navigate these tragedies. Please keep my sister and her precious girls in your prayers! She is here in New Orleans with me at this time and we are together.
On Friday April 11th, Andrew Powell and his brother-in-law were both struck by a vehicle while practicing for an Iron-man race. Unfortunately, his brother-in-law did not make it. Andrew is in critical condition with his loving wife, Sandra, by his side. We are praying and thanking God that he is with us. He sustained many injuries including crushed veterbrae and a shattered pelvis. Anybody who knows Andrew (or A.P as most people call him) knows that his strength is overwhelming and his love for running is what gives him the will and the strength to overcome anything. My goal here is to raise as much as possible as we know how overwhelming this situation is and it would be wonderful if the medical bills can be handled by his family, friends and loved ones. Life is so precious and every moment counts just as every little bit donated makes a huge difference. If you are unable to contribute, all I ask is that you continue to pray. God bless.
