The Menzies Bust Project

Welcome to the Menzies Bust Project - a project combining art, history, and botany.
Our goal is to reproduce a copy of the world’s only bust of Archibald Menzies, located at VanDusen Garden in Vancouver, Canada, and install it in the gardens of Castle Menzies in Scotland.
PHASE ONE: Reproduce the mold - $2,000 GOAL ACHIEVED
PHASE TWO: Re-cast the sculpture - $11,650
Placing this duplicate bust within the walls of the gardens will recognize and celebrate the life and achievements of one of Scotland’s greatest botanists and will commemorate the place where his interest in botany first took root. We hope it will also renew interest in his botanical discoveries and achievements, and will celebrate the cultural, historical, and other ties of affinity and affection between Canada and Scotland.
The aim is to have to the work completed and installed in the castle Menzies garden by August 2020
Once installed, the bust will make a valuable cultural contribution to the restoration of the castle gardens and will be an attractive celebration of the links of discovery and friendship between Scotland and Canada.
The original bust was made by Canada's celebrated artist Jack Harman (1927-2001) in 1987 and is believed to be the only bust of Archibald Menzies in the world. The bust will be reproduced by his son Stephen Harman (see video).
The project was initiated by Ted Menzies (Alberta, Canada) and Graeme Menzies (Vancouver, Canada) with the support of many other Menzies from across Canada and around the world, and with permission of The City of Vancouver. The project welcomes support from botanists, plant lovers, gardeners, historians, artists, genealogists, castle lovers, explorers, and naturalists everywhere.
Your support is enthusiastically encouraged and greatly appreciated.
PHASE ONE of the campaign has been achieved - the mold has been made, and costs for that work has been raised). We are now raising funds to cover the cost of casting a new bronze bust from the mold.
