For 45 years, Anita Cirba has been the principal trumpet player of both the Winston-Salem and Greensboro Symphony orchestras. Instead of going elsewhere to bolster her career and make a name for herself, she has invested her talents right here at home. Those who know her know how much she has given to the community and to all with whom she comes into contact. She never got into music for the money. Unfortunately, one still has to live and meet monthly expenses... and she has, although there was never much at the end of any month.
In June of this year she contracted pneumonia, and an xray showed she had a large mass on her left lung. From CT scan to PET scan to biopsy, no test was definitive. During the biopsy, her upper lip was pinched. Without any feeling there, for the next two weeks she was unable to play trumpet. After that , a very invasive surgery was required to get the mass out, and the upper left lobe of her lungs was removed. Because of chest tube drainage, she had to stay in the hospital for 14 days.
After discharge, things seemed to be going pretty well... until 9 days later, when she passed out and had to be taken back to the hospital by ambulance. An xray showed multiple blood clots on both lungs. Another 4 days in the hospital on a Heparin drip led to a second discharge. She is starting to get better but is very weak, and she will be on expensive blood thinners for the next 6 months.
It is scary enough to go through what Anita has gone through in the past 2 months. It is even scarier not to know when you will again have money coming in, and you have no certainty of how long it will take to be able to perform again at the level that is expected of you... And that doesn't count the mountain of bills that are starting to come in.
Anita has always been the one to give spare change to the homeless, to make sure you have a birthday card on your special day, and to make everyone feel important and loved. She knows no strangers.
