Our lives were forever changed on the night of Tuesday, November 13, 2018 when we found out that Les Shiroma (the youngest of 3 firefighter brothers in Hawaii) was diagnosed with a brain tumor...uncertain if it was malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous).
Prior to November 13, he originally thought his vision was getting bad, but it turned out that he had a two-inch tumor that was pressing against his skull. The tumor spread from the right frontal lobe across the corpus colosseum and partially into the left frontal lobe. It was causing extreme brain swelling and was at high risk for hemorrhaging and even the possibility of dying in his sleep.
Thus, nearly 12 hours after he was diagnosed, he was admitted into the hospital for an emergency 4-hour procedure where they were able to successfully remove majority of the tumor on the right frontal lobe of his brain. A portion of the tumor remains in his brain because it was too risky to remove all of it. About a week after the surgery he found out that the tumor (anaplastic oligodendroglioma) was indeed malignant (cancerous) and aggressive.
As he recovers from surgery, he will begin radiation and chemotherapy during the week of December 9, 2018. The 7-week (approx.) treatment program will include radiation sessions Monday through Friday in conjunction with oral chemo tablets daily.
He has a long road ahead of him and your donation will help cover these unpredicted medical costs. We ask that you pray for him and his family as they go through this hard time in their lives.
