My name is Kalif Price. As the Founder of Jah Jah Books, I have spent the last two years of my life encouraging literacy in children and families by sharing the rich cultural heritage of storytelling.
Last year we successfully published our first children's book of the Diaspora Series, Maasai Boy Heart of a Warrior , which sold over 1,000 copies, was turned into an illustrated audiobook and a stageplay that nearly sold out the theatre and got rave reviews.
Now it's time to do it again! We want to publish our second children's book - Zumbi: The Capoeira Freedom Fighter.
Story of Zumbi
We have all heard of historical legends like Harriet Tubman, whose valiant efforts to free over 300 Black slaves charged the hearts of American's. However, many are unaware of another ally for freedom not far away in South America, who helped over 30,000 escaped slaves settle in the emancipated territory of Palmares; a free colony for runaway slaves in Brazil.
His name is Zumbi (1655-1695), a Capoeira warrior and descendent of African royalty who dedicated his life for the fight for freedom.
Zumbi: The Capoeira Freedom Fighter, is the second book of the Diaspora series: Palmares, Brazil; a set of picture books that span throughout the African diaspora.
Jah Jah Books intends on publishing books that carry a positive message, promote self-determination, and inspires strong values in all children.
