I am an Australian lady and have just celebrated my 70th birthday. I am currently living in Abidjan, cote d'Ivoire, West Africa, after I came here to live with my Ivorian husband in December 2014 following four years of happy marriage.

When I arrived all was well for three months, then things drastically changed. My husband was struggling to find work so I gave him some money from my savings to apply at an agency. In the meantime, I trusted him to pay my rent and small shopping expenses, but he started to avoid doing that too.

From there, he began receiving strange phone calls. He would leave the room and I could hear him yelling at someone on his mobile. Eventually he told me he was in major debt to a loan shark here.

I started helping him pay the loan off but they kept demanding more and more money which I couldn’t give.

When I finally refused to give any more, my husband hit me so severely that I had to have four large stitches in my right eyebrow and was heavily concussed for several days. The hospital stitched my eye and I was told to leave. No X-rays, no medication, nothing. My upper body, face and arms were covered in heavy bruising.

Little did I know that while this was happening, my husband went to my landlord and stole my entire bond money on my villa here – six months-worth of rent which totalled around AU$5000. Then he completely disappeared.

After I arrived home from hospital I threw all my husband’s clothes and belongings over my back wall and told him never to come back. Then I went to police to try and lay charges against him. I was told that he had run away for fear of being caught. He kept phoning me and demanding more money, which I never gave. That was four years ago and I have not seen him since.

Both my parents have passed away and I lost my only sister to cancer three years ago. Meanwhile, my only daughter is bipolar and survives on a small Disability Pension, so I have no-one to fall back on for support in Australia.

My savings are depleted, so I have started my page here, hoping and praying that lovely people will help me return home to Australia.

At 70 years old, I am in need of my doctor and home care facilities. I have developed a lump on my right jawbone and I need medical attention. It has severely affected my hearing from my right ear.

With my airfare and cargo, money for my new rental bond, as well as to fix my car in storage, Ins and Rego and getting my furniture and clothing out of storage, I am aiming for $15,000 – if at all possible.

I save what little I have left from my Age Pension once a month but it’s only small. I have to pay rent on my storage in Australia once a fortnight and then pay my rent here in Abidjan the next fortnight. It is very, very hard. I would appreciate anything anyone could offer to help me finally get home. I want to come home so badly. Thank you
